Chrysler predicts a big hit as Charger orders pile up

Chrysler may soon have another hit on its hands.

The Auburn Hills unit of DaimlerChrysler AG says it has taken 20,000 orders and identified 85,000 potential buyers for the 2006 Dodge Charger sedan, which goes into production this week.

Not even the Chrysler 300 sedan, the automaker's biggest hit in years, posted such strong early numbers.

"To us, it's a good indication of the interest level in this vehicle," said Chrysler spokesman Rick Deneau.

But the four-door revival of the classic muscle car will face stiff competition in the midsize sedan category now ruled by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

Industry forecaster Global Insight predicts annual sales at 70,000 for the Charger, which would make it a hit but not a home run. The Accord sold more than that in the first three months of this year.

But Andre Tadros, general sales manager at Northwestern Dodge in Detroit, says early customer response tells him the Charger will be a strong seller.

"I haven't seen this much excitement for a Dodge in a long time," he said.

Chrysler will build the Charger at its plant in Brampton, Ontario, and expects to have the first models in dealerships by early next month.

Bastardization of a once great musclecar nameplate.

Oh who cares if they become popular. I think they are ugly and don't do the charger justice so I won't even think twice about them. They will just make our cars that much better looking on the road

That car is a nice engine in search of a body, which come to think of it describes the Chrysler 300 Hemi.

What about the Roadrunner?

They killed Plymouth. Maybe they could do a two door Magnum and call it a Super Bee. I'm not holding my breath, though...

Um a Charger doesn't have four doors. This is no Charger, just another excuse to use the nameplate.

Didn't T-bird orders pile up as well, Weren't they so hot you had to pay a premium to even get one?

Where's the mighty T-bird today? That's right on it's last production year and then dead again.

Please dont hold your breath DC I reade earlier this year remarked the 2 door is dead. Too bad because the lack of a 2 door Charger precludes any ideas of a remake of "Bullit".

That holds true for (almost) any new and different car. The "I gotta have it now" mentality that the dealers love and that screws individuals with too much money and little patience. Hey, wasn't that the case with the new Mustang?

As an all-around performer, the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 is capable of awe-inspiring numbers unheard-of in a muscle sedan: 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds, quarter-mile time in the 13-second range and braking distance from 60-0 mph in approximately 110 feet. The Dodge Charger SRT8 is also capable of accomplishing SRT's signature performance test of 0-100-0 mph in the mid 16-second range.

umm... if I'm reading this right the top of the line 2006 dodge charger is only equal/slightly better then the 05 stang GT. I'll take my 10k saved and invest in mods and smoke some 06 dodge charger wanna be's any day of the week.

That is the 6.2l 425 hp SRT model. The regular charger would never see performance like that. The SRT model will probably command a price that would be in Shelby territory.
