when I go to start the car after it has been sitting over night it has to crank for a while before it starts and when it starts there is an idel surge and when I stand on it down the road the car breaks up and back fires the power is still there though and when it warms up every thing is fine.
What could cause this?

have you pulled codes? before you start it, turn the key on and off a few times to cycle the fuel pump (builds pressure if the pump is weak). helps with diagnosis.

good luck.

During starting I had surging and a poor idle when it was real cold (< 30 degrees). This was with my old 24 lb injectors. Since the blower install with the 30 pounders I have never had a problem.

PS: this all took place back in IL, where it actually gets below 50.

ECT (Engine Coolant Temp sensor). it tells the puter how warm the coolant (motor) is and i think for you guys, it also is used to activate the cooling fan.

that is true that a bad ECT or ACT can cause problems (i.e. it tells the puter the car is warm when it is cold; the mixture will be too lean). and the thing is that the sensor can just be out of calibration - it will not toss a code as it is within absolute specs. it is just wrong for the situation.
what is your vacuum like? leaks sometimes make for cruddy start up operation, while smoothing out once warm.
good luck.

Start with cleaning your MAF. It's cheap & a common problem.

When the car is warm, put the pedal to the floor (has to be all the way to the floor to test wide open throttle). What happens? Does it hesitate?
