My car is leaking engine oil from in between the tranny and the engine. Has anyone else had this problem? What is it? I'm pretty sure it's a seal or something, but what is it called? Is it too hard to do at my house with a buddy's help??

Rear main seal could be the culprit. Check your O-ring on your dipstick also where it goes into the block.

Thanx, are there any tricks if I decide to do the install or should I just take it to a shop. They're charging me $300.

I you can change a clutch, you can do a rear main seal. The tranny, bell housing, clutch & flywheel all have to come off. Then it's just a matter of removing the old seal & using the old seal, tap a new one in.

input shaft of the trans is a possibility too. do you know its engine oil? are you loosing oil on the dipstick? how full is your tranny staying?

more than likely rear main seal though on the engine.

also, if anything on the back side is leaking, it tends to gravitate to between the bell and motor. valve covers are often at fault. i would make sure the PCV is up to par - if it is not venting as well as it should, the pressure can cause seals to leak (and sometimes make a hissing noise). oil pan gasket ok?

i would clean everything up and run it while watching. should see the source of the leak.

He has a good point. Is the fluid red, or dirt brown/black?

You have an automatic transmission, right? So it's definately more tricky than a clutch swap. The AT's are much heavier than the manuals. You need a automatic transmission jack, without a doubt. That way, you can leave the transmission on the jack, remove the driveplate, replace the rear main seal, and then put it all back together.
