So a friend of mine is serving overseas in Iraq right now until February and i decieded to pick up a set of blank Billet Specialties valve covers for his 1979 Malibu, and engrave the airforce logo onto them. The only pic i have at the moment is from my camera phone while the cover was on the CNC machine at work. I'll take some better ones later...
And here's the 'bu... has a 383 stroker, dart heads, pretty good sized cam(around .600 lift), a 200-4r trans, grand national rearend with 4.10's and has run an 11.90 at 112mph... and the car is the cleannnnnest malibu of those years ive ever seen. it also has 17's since these pics were taken

did you ever consider selling that as a service to people who'd ship you their valve covers? as long as you're not engraving anything trademarked or copywritten i think you'd be within the law and maybe make some coin in the process... just a thought though

I think that is a great idea, I'd be happy to commission you to do the work.
i would have no problem doing a set for anyone, the only thing is that it would have to go through the machine shop i work for as far as payment goes. I am not looking to make any money off of my employer and im just glad that he is cool enough to let me do stuff like this on my own time.
He told me a job like this would be roughly $200 per valve cover, but there is also alot of engraving going on with these covers, so the price would depend on the cycle time of the machine and the complexity of the design... If anyone wants a set PM me and hopefully we can work something out

How did they machine? Are they steel or aluminum? Are you going to coat them afterwords?
Sorry for all the questions, I used to be a part time machinist, and I loved doing jobs like that. My car has or had all sorts of custom machined stuff I made at work, haha.

they are aluminum, they machined pretty well, the cut is about .020 deep so there isnt a whole lot of stock removal. i was thinking about having them painted blue to go with the USAF theme, but im gonna let my friend deciede on that when he gets home... plus the pattern on the cover looks sick from the way the machine cut them, the finish is excellent on them, the way you see it in the pictures is the exact way they came off of the machine. No polishing or sanding or even deburring

I'll most likely get you do do a set, but I have to wait on other things. How much/where did you get the valve covers from.
