I just did the install myself and bought a used diablo off ebay for $250. to help ease the pain of the overall cost.

a gear install as not as bad a people think. I mean the pinion shim off my old 3.27's put the depth right on on my new 3.73's. you could have someone do the bearing swap on the pininos at a shop. If you don't car about the old pinion you can drive it out with a hammer.

you would need the folling tools

torque wrench
inch pound torque wrench
dial indicator
caliper bolts are 15mm
driveshaft bolts are 12mm
the pinion nut is 27mm
the cover bolts are 13mm
the carrier bolts are 3/4
cross shaft bolt is 8mm
magnet for the c clips
shim kit for setting the backlash
3 quarts of 75-140 lube 4oz of friction modifier.

the big thing with a gear install is set the pinion preload. 15inch pounds of roating mass for a old bearing (25 for a new bearing). then put the carrier in. I should go snug no pay but you should not have to drive it in so to speak. torque the carrie bolts to 65lbs and get the backlash .012"-.008". now put the grease on the gears and read the wear patter. backlash is easy. wear patter must be correct. I recomend finding a good shop manual or find something on the internet that really eplains the wear pattern. if it is correct all you do is pull the carrier out ad .005-007 to eash side and then drive it back in place. now you use the dial indicater to verify the ring gear has no more than .004" run out and you done.

the nice thing about doing it yourslef is you know it is correct. shops make money based on an hourly rate and even a not so great gear setup might last longer than they will stand behind it. correctly setup gears go 200K. no shop will guaranty that. I had a shop do gears once. lasted about 1 1/2 years. I was just in a bind and working a ton of hours. I should have just done them myself.
