So I've got an Eaton Posi and 31 spline Moser axles sitting in my garage right now waiting to be installed. Since I don't have a lift or serious power tools I think this job is beyond me. Anyone know about how much it would cost to install all of this stuff? I have no clue how long it would take or whats involved. Is there anything else I should have replaced while its apart?

I wouldn't pay anything more than 300-350 bucks. Everything that is involved in putting in the new differential and new axles in, is involved in setting up a new ring and pinion. Basically, all they are doing is pulling the ring and pinion out, to put you're new stuff in, and putting the ring and pinion back in. They have to do nothing extra than if they were to install a set of rear gears.

That isn't true at all. You don't need to remove the ring gear, nor the pinion gear. Why would you even think of touching the pinion gear?????

All that is needed is to remove brakes, ABS sensors, diff cover, c-clips & the axles, then remove the carrier, then remove the S-clip, take out the spyder gears & install the new posi unit.

It really depends on how hard it is to remove the spyder gears & install the new posi. If it's easy, then my guess is around $250 for 4 hours of labor. New lockers are really easy to install. But I can't comment on a new posi.

Much easier than installing a new ring & pinion IF the new posi unit isn't too difficult or needs special tools.

Why wouldn't you want to do this yourself? It isn't like you need to mess with the backlash/pinion depth of the R&P gears. My guess is a full set of sockets/wrenches would do the trick. Just see what is all involved with installing the new posi, and you will have a good idea of time estimated time involved.

You need special tools if you're going to do it yourself...i.e. to check backlash, u need to press some of the bearings off. It's quite a pain. I'm sure the new carrier doesnt come with the carrier bearings installed already, and these pieces wont be exactly the same so you will still need to check pinion depth and backlash.

Scott, I thought the ring gear bolts to the posi through the back side of the ring gear?

Yeah, thats what people told me I had to do so I figured this would be out of my hands.

A friend of mine who's a mechanic and has done the same swap on his car told me it would be an all day job. Plus he said I would have to grind down the axles in certain areas to get them to fit, does that sound right? Why wouldn't they fit from the factory?
