I'm tearing apart my engine to transfer the heads, intake, and cam to my new rebuilt short block. I removed the heads and the far right cylinder is pretty dark on both heads. Would this be that cylinder is running to rich? Or is this normal? There are no cracks in the head or valves and all the spark plugs looks normal on all cylinders. Also on the block, the passenger back 2 cylinders look different than the rest of the cylinders, and the driver side looks normal. On the pass side what kind of wear is that? Is this normal wear? What would cause that?

Top of the passenger pistons looks like some oil burning or some fuel additive residue. Generally the rear cylinders being a slightly different color doesn't totally freak me out. The engine tilts toward the rear and if not running optimal will get more fuel pooling in the intake/head causing discoloration. The lighter colored exhaust valves on those same rear of the engine cylinders would concern me more, lean looking. At any rate you can't see cracks in aluminum heads or condition of the valves without the proper tools. Take them to a machine shop to have them checked.

Is there a special spray paint I can buy that will show if there are cracks?
