Heard the suspension is not all that great on those cars, but I could be wrong

BTW, your drinking buddy is a lucky man

Seems like you think it sucks. Define suck. Against a Ferrari? Yes. Against a Civic? HELL no.

against most 25k cars.
Mark up is a factor, you can't quote the suggested price. it's a pig with a huge markup, the engine is amazing, now stick it in something 1000lbs less.

If you look around at the right places, you can find a GT500 for MSRP or less. If you can't find one, you aren't looking hard enough. Not only that, but throwing a KB on it and you can make close to 800rwhp safely. I'll take that ANY day of the week.

I guess the real question to me is how does it compare to a '03-'04 Cobra. More weight, bigger price, and what else? Is 5.4 vs. 4.6 worth much in the realm of modular motors requiring boost?

1) yes, Mark is wise for letting that one stick around

2) the civic doesn't suck, it does what it's supposed to do pretty well... which is last forever and use less gas. the GT 500 is meant to perform quickly, and it doesn't. It doesn't even have the "500" hp in it's namesake.

3) I have never seen a GT 500 for MSRP

4) I would of been happy with the old 03 cobra engine stuffed into a light 05 GT body with some emblems if they could of sold it for 30k.

I am only mildly impressed with it's looks.
I hate that they didn't use an all alum engine (and thus hate the weight increase)
I hate that it's a solid rear
I hate the suspension

For the a car that is supposed to be the performance benchmark for Ford for the mainstream market it sadly disappoints.

I still have the CnD issue where they interview the chief designer (about 2yrs before launch) and he goes on about how the new Cobra needs to be special, performance oriented. That it needs a strong IRS, light weight and tuned suspension.

And none of this arrived. We are told because of budget. Well with dealers (still) selling them for $15,000+ over sticker. Maybe Ford should try again and do what they said they were going to do and CHARGE what they need to. To make the profit they want. I don't know, maybe like $65,000 to $70,000 as most are selling now? It's obvious the buying public can afford that price. Because they are buying them.

If you are talking performance, the Civic sucks. Thats why I asked you to define "suck." As far as the Shelby GT500 "performing quickly," I'd have to argue it does. Just looking at Motor Trend (and not looking any further), they tested it 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds. I think thats pretty damn quick. Is it worth the money? That is perhaps the better question to ask. For its sticker price, I'd argue definitely. Include dealer markup, and maybe not. Even if you pick up a coupe for $50k, what FACTORY STOCK vehicle can you buy for that money that is quicker? The Corvette, but thats almost not even a fair comparison since it is faster than many cars that cost well over $100k. Maybe I'm forgetting some other cars, but nothing $50k or under is coming to memory.

So, no, I don't think it sucks at all. But I'd buy a Corvette before the GT500.

What do you mean? It is rated at 500 horsepower and 480 ft-lbs of torque. I don't see why thats really supposed to matter anyway since the original GT500's didn't have 500 hp either. They had 335, 355, or 360 horsepower depending on the year and specific version.

LOL..this thread is comedy...throw a CAI, smaller pulley, exaust and a quality dyno tune, and you have 520 + rwhp safely..A rock solid 6 speed tranny and much better brakes than GT's and Shelby GT's..
I cant believe Shelby GT owners are even talking smack..You want over priced, buy a Shelby GT for $11,500 over a GT..lol....The fit and finish from Shelby is a joke..I have an 08 on my showroom floor and the fake hood scoop looks like it was spray painted and the paint near the fake fastners is peeling.I am plenty happy with my 420 rwhp GT and full Steeda suspension and interior and exterior enhancments for less money than a 340 flywheel hp w/ Ford suspension Shelby GT .The GT500 does not suck, a few refinements, and you have a car quicker and faster than a Z06..I cant believe some of the comments ive heard so far on this thread..

Um....440RWHP = over 500SAE Net horsepower....wich is far more than the original made. Not to mention the original was rated using "GROSS" figures, which translates to even less still!

The GT500 is sex on wheels. It wasn't designed as a strait line runner, it was partially built as an all around performer, but mostly as an homage to the Shelby GT500 namesake. If you'll recall, the original GT500 wasn't overly special performance wise back in it's day either.

I'll take the Gt 500. 500+ RWHP with pulley/tune

It runs 12.7 because it doesn't hook from what I understand, that can be fixed.

The motor is a beast. The day I had my car tuned there was one with a KB over at MPH that made between 750-800 rwhp. I believe that was a stock motor.

Think potential with that car.

I'm with Gearbanger on this one. all the dynos i've seen suggest around 525hp at the crank. 12.4 with a capable driver in the 1/4mi for $41,000msrp. is the car perfect? no. is it overweight? yes. but it certainly doesn't suck.

I think we all are a little disappointed with the gt 500. I LOVED my '03 cobra, I paid under 30k for it new, had an amazing motor, and weighed 3505 lbs at delivery. Still no lightweight but a damnsight lighter than a gt500. I'm one of the many that jumped over to a vette after seeing the rediculous markups on the gt500s'. The corvette forum is overflowing with prior 03/04 cobra owners. I paid $44,000 for my 2lt (invoice) nicely appointed car, 3143 lbs off the truck. weight really matters to how a car feels, I get 21mpg in town too. The vette is faster than my '03 and handles much better, build quality is a bit better too.

Let me know in a few months what your dealer charges your to fix the squeaky brakes, and the shudder in the rear end.
Nothing like a car that has to be parked in reverse or it discharges the battery.. Lets see remote only, battery dead,,,,LOL,
Do you have long legs?? When the driver’s seat control module faults and defaults to all the way forward, good luck sitting in the seat.
Corvettes are nice,,, and they only cost $130K or so (ya need two, as one will be in the shop most of the time.)

NOTE: none of these are internet folklore or guesses,, just daily routine at a Chevy dealership . Ford, and the mustang have their own issues for sure,,,but Chevy has a host of um for real.
Best of luck… I’ll take a new Gt500 (at or near MSRP)

I've had the car a year and it has been trouble free, don't beleve everything on the net sir. I remember reading all kind of horor stories over at svt performance.com prior to buying my cobra. It does come with a 5yr, 100,000 mile warranty if something does happen.

My uncles on both sides of the family have owned 11 C5 and C6 corvettes, including three C6's right now. They have never had reliability issues, including after giving a C5 the Lingenfelter treatment. If you work at a dealership, of course you will only see the ones with problems. Who would bring their car in to the dealer because it is working properly?

Carrol Shelby should slap you right now..

Your only complaint about the Shelby is the hood scoop? Any of the owners that have issues with the scoops are getting them replaced for free..

For the price of the package you are buying more than parts and the labor- you are buying a Shelby- plain and simple. 20 years from now, your car will still be only a GT.. But the Shelby's (500's and GT's) will still be Shelby's..
