Is there anyway to get the spring into the door hinge without having to take the door off? It seems like way to small of a deal to take time to take the entire door off just so i can get the spring in between the hinge....any ideas?

i tried that except i did it with guitar strings...they held but the problem was that the spring only compressed on one side even though we had like 4 or 5 strings on each end, they all moved to one side and compressed only one side so the spring still couldnt fit. Any other ideas?

most tool stores sell the tool to compress the spring. It's pretty simple really, two arms hinged on one end, with a nut and bolt in the center to compress. good luck

This might help..

I had the same problem with the wires moving to one side of the spring. I took a file and made small notch at the end and the front of the spring. The wire can't move now because it stays in the notch...et voila!
