Rule of thumb: Ford is cheap. If there was any way of doing the job without using a part, they would do it.
The check valve prevents exhaust gases from backing up into the smog pump control valves and plumbing and damaging them. If the engine backfires through the exhaust, that would damage the smog pump control valves and plumbing.
