Ok guys I'm FINALLY taking the Mach out to get the exhaust done. Having duals run, so far no cats, with the pipes dumping in front of the rear tires. Still undeided on a couple of things though- X or H pipe, and what mufflers. Seems everyone and thier brother run Flowmasters, so I'd like to get a different sound but not sure what to go with, Dynomax? Spintech?

Any ideas? (especially if you have any sound files to share )

What size exhaust are you going with? What's your engine combo?

I have 1 5/8" primary, 3" collector Hooker LT's
I have a full 3" system from the headers all the way out back.
I used a Magnaflow 3" X-Pipe, 3" Magnaflow high flow cats and 3" Magnaflow mufflers.

Here's an audio clip of how it sounds: http://www.starshadow.com/~gael/vids/mustangiiexhaustrev.mp3

Here's what the system looked like.

I sure like the sound of my 2.5" Dynomax Super Turbos along with long tube headers and 2.5" pipes. I get alot of compliments on both my 289ci Mustang II and the 318ci Duster I have. Alot of people have asked if it was a big block lurking under the hood, becaue of the sound of it. Definately one of my top choices! I did pick up a pair of Flowtech Afterburners to put on my smallblock 67 Ranchero. Will have to see what they sound like when i cross that path.
I too am tired of Flowmaster and their knockoffs. That tinny, hollow sound just doesn't do it for me anymore. Part of it could just be that everybody and their realitives are running the dang things too.

The bset part of the Dynomaxes is that when you're low speed crusing or idling, they are a quite rumble and not offensive, but when you mash it they will sound like a prostocker on the 1/4 mile with great tone!

Flowmasters kick ass. And you can tweak the exhaust note with changes to pipe diameter, muffler style, add resonators, cats, etc.
On my car, I tried sliding 2 more spare flowmasters onto the existing dual flowmasters, (no crossover yet) and all four of them sounded very nice. A lot quieter than 2 obviously, but producing a similar tone. If it wasnt for the terrifying weight gain of four mufflers, I would have installed them.
I wish flowmaster would offer a six chamber muffler.

About your question, I read an article on crossover pipes, and the Dr. Gas X-pipe had the highest dyno numbers. (this was a few years ago, though)

Edit: If someone could host my burnout vid, you would hear my exhaust.

I would respond similarily about the old Cyclone Sonic Turbo's I've had on my car for 20+ years now. Seems the get better with age too! I'm probably due for new exhaust next year as well however, and am also interested in hearing the responses to this thread, especially in regard to the H versus X pipe setups, in similar arrangement to 78Mach1's.

In that clip, I brought the motor up just a bit over 8000 rpm, so it's got the high revs as well as the idle to hear.

Hello everybody. Its been some time since I have posted here. I have a 78 King Cobra that I put a built 351W into. I used a set of hedman hedders and reworked them to say the least. I then use a set of Flowmaster 40 series mufflers and ran the 2 1/2" pipes out just in front of the rear wheels.

These mufflers are perfect. The car runs loud enough at idle to really hear the cam but when you open it up, it screams. It's pretty lous but quiet enough to keep the sound police sleepin.

I highly reccomend the Flowmaster 40 series mufflers.

Yeah I guess a little more info might help a little bit wouldn't it OH:

just my little 302- nothing MAJOR yet, .030 over, start of an edelbrock performer package- cam, intake and for now a set of ported E7's(ran out of $ before I got heads...). Had picked up a set of the Dynomax/Blackjacks off of ebay a while ago, and that is all I have on the Mach right now as far as exhaust goes. It's a little on the loud side : Going to run 2.5" pipes. Right now just looking for the sound- something different is good. I know the X pipes tend to make more power, but is there a difference in sound between them and an H or are they about the same?

I kinda like the sound out of the Magnaflows, but am kind of leaning towars a set of the Dynomax's- pricewise at the moment.

I think they'd look funny sticking out in front of the tires. Might have to get one for the POS SL1 though- the little spinny propeller thing might give it some added push to help it get out of its own way

An H or X pipe will definately change the sound a little bit. You have to weigh that on wether or not you want the small gain in torque as well as the cussing factor whenever you either have the work on the tranny or pull it out. If you put the crossover too far back (aft the tranny) it doesnt add any benefit. Closer to the engine, the better. Most of the time it's within inches of the header collector *if* there is adequate clearance. I have an H-pipe welded in on my 2.5 exhaust and i hate it. I can't pullthe tranny without pulling the entire exhause system or pulling the whole eng/trans combo. I'm gonna try to make it a removable one but if that becomes a problem or a 'continous leaker' I'll just junk the whole H-pipe ordeal, just so that it's 100 times easier to work on.

My bros' Maverick had an X-pipe on it and once we removed it (I got pissed and sawzalled the damn thing out because it made tranny removal nearly impossible) it sounded alot more crisp and held a much better tone to it.

To each, his own. In my opinion, unless you road course race it or its a full on race car, there's really no need for one.
