This to me is a sad thing and show's what type of company they are. It's a very unprofessional way of doing bussines but when you have a lot of overhead you got to do what you got to do. Either you screw your customers with high shop rates or you try and take a bigger market share. AFP rise above it and just keep your original Stangnet meet date then. I will keep my other thoughts to myself for now.

I don't know if this actually classifies as phishing, but it does certainly seem a bit
hokey. Although it may be legal for Fast Spec. to do this, I think it is not the wisest of ethically sound business practices. A little mis-directing on their part (parden the pun). Just my .02 cents

The reason I classify it as illegal is they are using a trademarked name for a domain and phishing customers over to their site. Although we could classify those who are not wise enough to catch this "dumb" or slow, that’s beside the point. Those customers who use the net to find these businesses likely don’t know who, what, and where these businesses operate. It's this faction of individuals that will be duped and screwed. You cannot legally reroute customers with someone else’s name. Period.

Tyler, its not phishing if you redirect to your own business with different domains. THAT however is redirecting traffic intended for others. That is what we call stealing.

Do a wikipedia search for it.. Not much mentioned about internet but I think we can all apply it to this situation. Misleading customers who are unaware they are not getting the comany they intended to reach.

Search for what? I know what this stuff is. And it's certainly not phishing.

Not even close. I'm in no way defending FAST and see it as an entirely dick move but it's important to be correct with the facts when you're calling someone out.

ok I wasnt going to respond to this thread HOWEVER... Tyler, Im sure you dont or maybe you do? know that FAST is right down the street from AFP and are in the "same" line of business however they are by no mean "competition" (imo). I agree with it being lame too but when one company starts a website do they sit back and think ohh I better purchase all the domains so the shop down the street wont buy them and to think that at one time I actually stepped foot in that business and bought something from them. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I was aware FAST is in the general locale, but not really sure how far apart.

Weak tactic to gain extra traffic but you live and learn. Check out some of the larger domains or companies with .COM -- they'll usually have the other major extensions redirect to their main site. That also protects them from BS like this.

Purchasing the domain name isn't that expensive to have it redirected, but buying the name and having it hosted on it's own server can be. Make sure you understand the differences, and how important it can be in the future.

That's all.

I have done business with both shops as well...I would say that this is pretty messed up...Both businesses seem to be reputable, but my experience has told me...Fast is usually a bit more expensive and the work isn't quite as good..However, since Jeff is such an awesome mechanic and everyone knows it...He gets SOOO much business...I have seen it take a month to get into the shop...That was awhile ago and it has been very consistent lately that you get in within the week...But the other day I was having trouble with my throttle body, and I couldn't get into AFP...I needed the work done THAT DAY, so I went into Fast and the issue was resolved satisfactorily...I would ALWAYS prefer to take my projects to Jeff and I know if he had done this work the car would idle much better than it does, but sometimes having another place to go to is handy...Jeff, keep up the good work, you're amazing man!! I will continue to appreciate your service as long as I can get in there to get it done...!

Redirect.

Like I said, you can buy domain names for cheap to have them redirected to your real site. In this case it's redirected to FAST's and is just misleading. It costs maybe $10-15, no one has purchased the domain -- why not?

I'm pretty confident whomever setup the redirect knew what they were doing, thus executing the unethical business decision.

I see. Well a redirect just sounds too easy I guess. Doesn’t carry a negative connotation like their actions.

The reason I deemed it as phishing is that is what I was taught in my schooling. The basic function of phishing is to "redirect" a customer to attain info in order to get their money. These basic functions are still in place as they are attaining customers based upon AFP's name and profiting. I guess I just didn’t have any other title for the illegitimate actions....

Actually, it doesnt affect us as we do not sell on our site. All we do is show off the cars we are working on, and inform customers of upcoming events. If we used the site like Blue Oval, as a store, and lost profit I could see it as an issue. I guess in a way its a compliment to our name to have another business feel the need to use us in that way.

I have met Ron in person a few times, and he seems like a very nice guy. I honestly dont see Ron as the one that did this. I do however have a strong feeling about who did, as we have had issues before with her, like the blue tape fiasco. Ron was not a part of that, and has apologized that it was ever brought up.

I understand that you don’t sell on your site, but part of product branding and logos as well as brand names is the value associated with it. I personally was not calling out any individual as I have only met HER as well, and at the time she was nice to me. I could care less how much of a beautiful smile I receive face to face, this was an unethical act that will drive business away, and it was my intentions to expose this cowardice move.

The distinction to make here is that phishing, historically, has been acheived when the victim is unknowingly redirected to an alternate site, where their personal information is taken(or volunteered) and often used fraudulently.
A popular example of this a few years back, occured when many Hotmail users were spammed by con artists, who had copied the basic page layout from the American Red Cross. They then set up a phony Red Cross site, using real Red Cross graphics and information, in order to entice people to, "donate to Hurricane Katrina victims." Many people fell victim, as they had no idea that they had been redirected from the email to a fraudulent site.
If FAST was guilty of phishing, an example would be to hack into Chung's web site for BOP. When someone went to pay online for an item, Chung's payment page would not appear. Instead, the customer would unknowingly be redirected to a FAST payment page, where there would be no indication that the page was not from BOP. At this point, the customer would submit personal information, which would be utilized in any number of illegal manners.
Both of these examples would be classified as illegal. Redirecting people from a similar URL, to your own site, is a common, cheap and effective tool in the e-commerce world. In this case, it was utilized in a less than classy manner. If AFP customers want to find AFP, they will.

I understand this as I have read many definitions, and did my research. My point in posting the comment you responded to was to state that the same basic functions exist. Either way its a moot point. The main concern is the lack of integrity. Thats all.

OK Guys - I too have hesitated to respond and get involved in this but when something like this happens, it affects the mustang hobby as a whole,(and thats when I feel compelled to get involved), not just some competition between 3 shops. Now Im not really computer savvy, but lets think about this for a minute. Who stands to gain or lose in this scenario. As I understand computers, anyone could have bought the domain name and made the link to Fast. Does anyone have any proof that they did it. Now dont anyone get butt hurt over what I say next as they are just hypothetical situations. All Ford and KKP both have alot to gain by discrediting Fast. Also, there are alot of plain sick folk who get on the bandwagon and would want to discredit Fast because Stangnet seems to be biased against them. I too have talked to Ron about the sticker issue and it wasnt his doing. We all know that. Do you really think they would be stupid enough to do something like this and hang themselves. Anyone on this forum could have done this. Could have been me, could have been Cory, could have been any number of people. All I am saying is, lets get some facts before we accuse, judge and convict someone. Does anyone have any hard evidence that Fast did this? Or are they the victim of some sick person. Like I said before, we have talked with Ron and he did not make that call about the tape. But the email was sent from a person within the company. We still have it in case there are disbelievers, we even offered to forward it to Ron at one point. I dont consider it a big deal because he has apologized but it does make me believe they are capable of something like this, likely without Rons knowledge.

Dave -

Be careful when you make these statments "All Ford and KKP both have alot to gain by discrediting Fast." This has nothing to do with KKP nor do we care about the outcome since it really doesn't hurt anyone plus KKP is on the westside. The domain register issue will come out. It is very interesting that it was just registered then a post comes out about it? I'm not sure just anyone can redirect a domain to other sites? I would think only the owner of the domain could? I'm not a computer guy so maybe someone can enlighten us?

I'm not going to say much about this because of my connection to AFP, but I just wanted to say that I think it is pritty lame. I actually had to check it out for myself befor I could belive it. I am not a expert in the ways of buisness management or internet protocalls or whatever, but I think that its not a "good" buisness practus to do such a thing. And to think AFP was nice enough to move their date so it would not conflict with others dates. Oh well I guess, what can you do?

1. The rules of the domain name game are simple: you buy it, you own it. End of story. The InterNIC makes it so.

2. You guys battling it out to prove who's the better service provider in this regional discussion forum is childish, pointless, and is not condoned. Sponsors are allowed to promote their agenda, because guess what--they PAY to support this site. They don't steal publicity as some do.

3. The multiple user account concept is another immature, childish act. You know who you are, so drop it. This forum is becoming a wasteland because of the diluted nature of the posts herein.

Move on.
