I sold my first car 20 + years after. buying a Fox Mustang and already had received the white elephant family GM A body. To keep grandparents speaking with me, I sold the pretty, but pretty slow,one. I missed an auction where she sold, now it is back up for sale,and is almost as good as when I sold her. My hands like power steering instead of manual now,, she's still slow, but darn I want it back. I would have trouble buying a fatty motorcycle at this price! And it has sbout 30 k on it. Am I nuts, or would drivinga 196@ classic and a 90 stang be OK? I love my grand Marquis, but letting the Kids learn to drive a safe car sounds sponsible.
Am I nuts like chasing an old girlfriend or reclaiming part of my his story?

So that is the last time I ask a question at midnight! I was too tired to catch all the stupid auto corrects and typos. So here it is in short.

Who would or would not buy their first car back if the price was right, the car was in good shape and you could make room? Why or why not?

Stupid, Stupid auto correct! I spelled RATTY bike three times! In other words, I could get it for less than a $hitt¥ motorcycle. Sponsoble? Where did it come up with that? Responsible is the right word.

Re: Grand Marquis - I can give the kids my daily driver in a couple of years. They would be safer than me.

A White Elephant is a gift you can not get rid of, but eats you out of house and home. That's not an uncommon expression.

I have kept track of it, and it has sst in a couple of quonsets and been driven only a little since I sold it. Weatherstrip and other rubber parts are probably the worst. The paint is still buff able, with no rust in the body panels. The brother of the first owner tweaked the rear bumper. I pulled a replacement at a salvage yard, but was saving it until I was done in college parking lots. I do not know if it stayed with the car or if I would have to chase down another.

If you have a chance to buy it and it means something to you, sure why not buy it back. My first car was a 4 door boat hand me down that you couldn't give me back.

DocG - thanks for the warning. I will be sure to not come to you with a life and death crisis. Especially if that is how well you listen to a crisis of practicality vs. want. Dr. Phil at least clarifies the issues before "Gibbs slapping" guests.

To the rest, thanks for "listening." I will see if I can get there in time to go for a cruise and an inspect it in person. A family member took pictures and evaluated it for me already.

Are you in love with the old car....or are you in love with the memory of your old car. Went through a similar thing years back when I found my first Fox body in a sad state of shape at a local wrecker. Contemplated buying it back, but in the end it was the memories I made back when I had the car that got me thinking about it....not how great a car it was. Keep in mind....the car has only gotten older, rustier and in a worst state of repair since you sold it.....not better.

Unless it's got some legitimate collectable value, I'd pass. The sentimental attachment is what you're feeling now and its taking prescient over good old fashioned common sense....which its only going to cost you money and grief.

Gearbanger101 - making sure it is the car, not just the memories, is why I need to see and test drive (her) it and inspect in person. I did not want to sell in the first place, (but what college kid can afford three cars), and have kept track of it since I sold it. It has been parked inside and used so little. In some ways that is very good news. In other ways, just stored dry and not used or worked on is not the best on a car either. It may leak oil all over and the Powerglide may not shift well now. Anyone old enough knows drum brakes are not meant to sit unused either. If any of those are the case, I have to decide if I am up to doing the work, or can afford the help. It's not the only one to have gotten older. But unlike me, the car is still beautiful! It still will be slow, but if I have to tear the motor apart for new seals, that can be helped some with a cam swap, or mothballing the 30k mile motor and swapping in a bigger 6.

And my Mustang is still fast for when I need that.

My wife wants me to get it (she thinks it will make me happy), and we will need another car soon. That's the best part; I have a good wife!

Curious though, in one post you mention kids getting your car in a few years....then you mention you being a college kid not able to afford three cars. Dude did you reach puberty at age 4 and bang the babysitter?

My apologies for bad jokes. If you see it and want it, go for it. Set aside practicality and enjoy passion. Cliche but we only live once.

DocG, you are poor at math, even if you are good at being sassy. How about a some clues to clear it up how old I am. No babysitters were involved.

I sold my first car while in college, (when I bought a 1979 Mustang and was given the family GM. No secrets from previous posts.) At that time, they were still making Fox body Mustangs. And I have been keeping track of it since well enough to know it is a time capsule. You will probably diagnose me as an automotive stalker after this many years. Some of my classmates have school age grandkids by now.

The answer to how old I am is "Old enough to change points, rebuild a carb, use a manual choke, drive a clutch and appreciate vent wings."

If it's the car you remember go for it! Not a stalker. My first car was a 78 Camaro and I would buy it back if I had the chance even though I'm sure after so many years it would not be as cool and fun as I thought it once was.
