I don't see anything in the owner's manual about doing the first oil change any faster. I thought you were supposed to because of new engine metal flakes in the oil.
Is there any reason why it is 5000 instead of 3000? I had heard about changing your oil to get rid of the engine metal. I am getting ready to go on a road trip to Panama City FL and was going to change the oil before I left. I have about 1800 miles on it.
I changed mine at 1,000 miles and it was mighty dirty. Some have been changing as early as 20 miles, 100 miles, 500 miles, or 1,000 miles. I'd change before 3,000 for the first change. I would and I did. Up to you, though.

I agree. Cheap insurance. I did mine @ 500, 3500, 5100 (added Engine Sentry) http://www.enginesentry.com/home.html then @ 6195 I went with Amsoil 0W-30 Full Synthetic!
