Ive just hit 3K on the ol' odometer and want to change to synthetic oil.....too early still? Should I wait the 2K out until changing it for the first time or no big deal....?

change it out now with synthetic and a motorcraft filter. use either Mobil 1, Redline, or Amsoil, all are a good quality oil

is the type of filter a big issue also? I just use a basic Fram filter with Mobil 1.

fram is one of the worst made oil filters known to mankind. use the motorcraft filter if you want to save money $3 at WalMart, or a K&N, Amsoil, or Mobil 1 filter of you want to spend more.

The Motorcraft filter is pretty good quality and reasonably priced. It has an anti-drainback valve in it (a rubber flap on a spring) -- a feature of all good filters. I can't put my fingers on the "oil filter comparison test" but Fram did not come out very well. Maybe they have improved them?

#1: You can buy a Motorcraft 820S at any Advance Auto Parts and they will price match Wal-Mart's $2.97 price
#2: Just changed my '04 GT with 1,500 miles to Mobil 1 5w-30.
Next change at 5k and then every 5k thereafter.

I changed over to Mobile 1 at 1,700 miles. I've changed it 3 times since and now have 14K miles. Runs great!
