Floor Insulation & Sound Deadening

I am in the preliminary process of restoring the interior of my 65 fastback and wanted to get a few tips on sound and heat deadening for floor prep. I was planning on stripping the carpet and using Dynomat on the floors. I also purchased a sound insulation kit from MP which appears to be pre-cut sheets of black rubber like material. Do I use this underneath or on top of the dynomat? How do I afix the sheets, 3M spray adhesive?

You need to put Dynamat first, since you have to adhere the adhesive back directly to the metal floor to have a better noise and heat cancellation. Then you could just lay down the rubber mats on. 3M is a good choice, I bought one that is used for craft projects and it has worked good.

i've heard some good things about FATMAT.

it's about 25% the cost of dynomat and just as, if not, more effective.

I just got done putting Fatmat in my car. You can't beat the price and if you want extra material you can put down another layer and still be much cheaper than dynamat. The product seems to be nice and intalling it was easy but very time consuming.

Just curious, have you driven the car since completing the installation of the Fatmat? How effective was it for sound deadening? Price is great, but if it doesn't work that well, then your not really saving anything. I ask because I am planning to do this update as well and think Dynamat is way overpriced.

How many square feet do I need to cover the car?

I ordered the Fatmat on Ebay and it had 100 sq feet. I just got done doing the interior floor, kick panels, firewall ..... and I used right at 50 feet. I still have the trunk and quarter panels and wheel wells left. i should have a little left but it will be close. I have a convertible so needless to say I don't need to do the roof. To sum it up about 100 aq feet for a vert and 150ish for coupe/fastback.

I went with Damplifier Pro. It controls sound as well as Dynomat, but it handles heat much better. I'm in the middle of the install, and it will be another few months before I get my car back on the road, so I don't have any real world test results yet.

I haven't driven it yet. But I did tap it with a hammer while installing it. Taped passenger side without and then drivers side with. That was a big difference. I am sure you will give up a small benefit over dynamat but not that much. If I feel I want more insulation or have some extra when the project is done I will add what I have left. By having two layers I can't see how it wouldn't work better than dynamat.

I forgot to tell you that I did use Fatmat, and you definitively can feel the difference. I bought 50 ft which where enough for the floor, firewall, kickpanels, and quarter panels. Here is a pic from the installation:

Very informative article! I think I am going to go with the Damplifier Pro product, but wow this stuff is expensive at $280 for an 80sf roll. I will most likely need to order two rolls to complete the car and will also need a gallon of POR for $120...this is a lot more costly then expected.

Few more question about cleaning floors and applying POR:
- Do I just order a gallon of this stuff and just apply it directly to the floor?
- What tool/brush is best to apply it with (brush/roller)?
- What do I prep/clean the floor boards with?
- How many coats of POR do I use?
