In terms of market cap, BP kills XOM @ $1.45T vs XOM's $371B

351CJ,

Where did you get this data from amigo? I was told that XOM was the largest oil company in the world. I went to the Exxon-Mobil and BP web sites and checked their assets under the financial information links. XOM claims 195.3 Billion in assets (exploration, production, refining, holdings, equip, marketing, etc) while BP claims 93.1 billion in assets. I think assets is a fancy term for "stuff we own" which is usually the primary indicator of how "big" a company is. Sorry for being off-topic, but you got me curious.

Just do an internet search on BP & XOM, you'll find all the financial data that you can handle.

Although Jenns05Stang seems to be enamored with BP, I agree with you that XOM seems to be a more substantial company with more assets and higher earnings. But assests of an oil company can vary greatly depending on how their oil reserves are valued on the balance sheet. On the other hand annual sales (hence cash flow) are usually of more importance in the fincial community in valuing a company than assests are. A company that trades near their asset price usually does so because the fanancial community thinks the company is on the way down (loosing sales & profits). Again revenues (sales), profits and free cash flow are of far more importance in determing the value of a company than assets are.

I just find it interesting that Ford (as American as it gets) is recommending gas from British Petroleum (that is what BP stands for, you know). Just in case you're wondering, BP is my own favorite gas, just as Amoco was in '65 when I ran high octane unleaded in my 289 4v 4-speed....

I read somewhere that the oil companies in the U.S haven't built a new refinery in over 20 years.

That is true. You can thank the tree hugging, backpack wearing, granola eating, Birkenstock wearing, spotted owl saving, bike riding environmentalists for that. The US definitely needs more refining capacity, but nobody wants a refinery in their back yard.

Hahahahahaa I agree 100% with you!

351CJ - Hey... I am not enamoured with BP. I get my gas from Chevron. LOL
