When it comes to brands and gasoline you don't always get what you think you are getting. In the NJ/PA area there are 4 major refineries that serve every single has station for quite a large radius. When the Sunoco plant for example is shut down for maintenance/upgrades the other plants supply their fuel needs and vise versa. There are also stations that don't have local refineries in our area such as BP or Gulf, they get their fuel from the local available refineries as well.
Personally I go to stations that I trust and have used for years, when on the road traveling it is what it is and I go wherever I have to to get fuel. I typically like to use stations that are well maintained, first impressions I guess lol. In NJ the Dept of Consumer Affairs has a list of stations served infractions for fuel not meeting posted standards, I avoid these stations completely...

Sunoco 93, because I trust them that the 93 is 93...Then Shell, Hess, and BP in that order

Gasoline is a commodity, Mobil sells to Shell, Shell sells to Sunoco, etc. Just because there is a distribution center in your area for your favorite brand does not mean the gas in the tanks was refined by that brand.

Only when the gas is pumped into a delivery truck does it take on any resemblance to a specific brand with the additive package that is specified by the brand.

I go to stations that are busy and turn over the gas quickly. That's the best way to ensure you are getting good consistent gas.

How about non-ethanol gas. Is that even a concern with newer cars that are driven regularly?

I would much rather use non methanol gas but it just simply isn't available in my area. My weed wacker and lawn mower carbs would thank me, that's for sure!

I only use top-tier gas. Shell, BP, or Chevron are what I use in that order of preference. As far as non-ethanol gas, there is a Sunoco station that sells 87 and 89 octane in my area and I use the 87 in my small engines but not in my Mustang.

Here in the Atlanta area the RaceTrac chain of stations has a station or two with the non-ethanol blend in 87 octane as I recall. It's more expensive than the standard blend 87. BP is my choice since I've used it for more than thirty years in my pov's with no problems. There's plenty of their stations around too.
