I am going to change my fuel filter this weekend, but I have a question. I read in the shop manual that you need to relieve the pressure in the fuel system before removing the filter. I know where the shrader valve is, but have never touched one. How does that work?

The valve is located on the fuel rail, passenger's side front. It is just like a bicycle or car tire valve. There is a small stem in the center that opens when pressed in.

I used a small flathead screwdriver and stuck it down in the valve to relieve the pressure. Anything will work that will fit and push the valve. Also make sure you have a towel or something to catch any fuel that may run out. Watch the eyes too.

I just pulled the cap off and let it sit for a while before I touched it.

You still get some spillage though.

Also remember you'll need the disconnect tool. Its the metal red one at Autozone etal

Werd. I just usually let my car sit for a bit and then change it out. Haven't had any issues so far.

just wrap a t- shirt size rag around the release point on the fuel filter.....
toward the gas tank side....... not that much gas will come out any way...
I've done it that way 3 times, no problem.

I've had maybe a cup of fuel come out. All I did was remove the fuel filler cap. Just hold a rag to the connection right when you're about to pull them apart.

Unplug the inertia relay in the trunk and run the engine til it runs out of fuel.

Not as messy

if your car was on beforehand, i woudl just flip the inertia switch like mustang5l5 said, and let it run till it dies.

should i go with a ford OEM filter, or can i get one from our usual parts store?

Well the usual parts store should have Motorcraft, so pick one of those up

Thanks for all of the replies. I have the tool to take it off and am going to use a small clamp I have to keep the fuel spill to a minimum. Sounds like it should be a piece of cake. Thanks again guys!

Stay far away from anything FRAM... low quality crap.

WIX or Motorcraft fuel filter only.

Neat info on why Fram sucks too:

You need to explain why Fram sucks????

I'd avoid running the car till it dies, it's hard on the engine. Remember, lean is BAD...

Just push the valve (if you have one) and do as the link above says.

When buying the tools, make sure the edge (top) of the tool where it fits into the line is squared of or really close to it. Many tools (cheap ones) are tapered and they usually don't work on Stang lines.
