Depends on if you want to get into the trans or not, I can always tell the difference between a shift from a stock one and one with a shift kit.

Hey, I am new here and I own a transmission shop. The easiest way to tell if an AOD is "built", which is really just a saying, unless you mean rebuilt. The way to make an AOD built is to drill some pressure releases in the valve body AKA a shift kit, also the EPC solenoid can be turned up causing the tires to roll ooff in all gears except OD.

If the tranny is outof the car, look at the inout shaft. If it is a built most of the time people swap to a one pice input shaft. Also can check if the one-way roller cltuch hsa been upgraded to the mechanical diode, by turning the input shaft. When you spin the input shaft, it should make a ratching sound when spun in on direction. If has the one way roller clutch still installed,it won't make the ratching sound, but more of a sliding sound. And with out going into the tranny there really isn't much more you can do do tell. If you go into it, check if the intermediate clutch pack for 3 or 4 clutches. Usally built AOD upgrade to the 4r70w 4 clutch pack in the intermediates. Look at the intermediate pressure plate in should have 4r on it. And check the OD band, for the largers 2" replacement.. Maybe pull the pan and valve body to check for better OD servo. ("A" servo or billet one) The OD servo will have a letter on it, if itis a ord unit, "A" or "B", etc.. You want the "A" if not the billet one. That way you can check VB for shift kit or if the VB has been swapped for a better one with OD on switch. If that is the case the VB should have a solenoid on it for OD and have a wire coming out of the case or pan for it.

Check out this site for AOD parts... http://www.ford-aod.com/#Performance Parts

If you go into it, here are pics of the items usally upgraded....

This is a pics of the intermeditiate pressure plate..

Now are you talking about rebuilt or built as in it is a quicker harder shift?

Need to rotate the input shaft, at the front of tehtranny. The sound should come from right behind the pump..

Without breaking down the tranny completely and inspecting clutches for Alto red's or Ray Besteo's blues then, there's really not much more you can do to determine if it was built with up grades parts, at this point.
