I have a 1993 mustang cobra. The last two times I put gas in it, I noticed the nozzle didn’t auto shut off when it got full and fuel spilled out from under the car. After the second time, I looked under the car and noticed it leaking from where the filler neck meets the tank. I bought a new seal but will have to have a mechanic put it in. What is a decent price to have it put in?

Just a filler neck seal, I wouldn't pay more then 2 hours labor, not that hard especially with a lift but make sure to bring in close to empty. depends on who your comfortable letting work on it I guess. Lots of places don't want to toch older cars any more lol.

I paid ~$350 for every seal on my gas tank to be replaced. That included parts although all the seals themselves are fairly cheap. This also included pressure testing the tank if that’s not like a normal thing a shop would since mine was all for smog purposes.

the seal itself $30.

Fairly easy job that can be done solo but two people makes it easier. Run the gas tank down to as low as possible.

I’ve done them in an hour solo on my garage floor. I can’t imagine a shop taking 2 hours or more to do it with a lift and a cradle for the tank.

Plan on 400.00
The Aerostars are worse, Mustangs are easy
You have to use excessive force to get that filler neck through the new tank grommet
Think Gorilla and push hard
Why not do it yourself?

400 bucks to install a 10 dolla part?
Do it yourself, it's a bit of a pain with a jack lay'n on your back but it's worth it. You won't have to go back and fix the stuff they 'jack up'.

Mix a few drops of Dawn in a spray bottle of water you would be surprised at how well it works..... We used this on WS rubber gasket installs when the customer OR paint shop would not allow us to use Silicone spray.....

That’s all I have ever used when installing fuel filler necks. It doesn’t take much and like Limp mentioned you can cut it with water. Are we missing something?

You’d be surprised what we spec dawn dish soap to be used for in the semiconductor industry. It’s the best thing since sliced bread. That and WD40 are probabably pretty universal on what they get used for.

Christ... 2 hours of work max... If you're anywhere nearby, I'm in Vass, NC. I'll do it for $200 in an hour. Just bring me the car on a low tank.. I'm not even a mechanic... I'd just hate to see someone getting ripped off to put seals on their fox's fuel tank. Prices are ridiculous if mechanics are getting away with $400 for this job!

I actually found a local mechanic with great reviews to do it. He only charged $175. He did great work too.
