Good deal?

I don't know why I'm thinking about buying another mustang......... but found what seems like a pretty good deal. I wanted to get some opinions and had some questions. The car is a 88 gt being sold by the original owner. 165k miles, 5 speed, guy says tranny seems to be operating perfect. The car has a clean title, no body damage. However the car needs paint, some peeling on the roof/body and faded paint. Interior is ok. Guy says the car runs but runs rough because it needs a valve job and tune up, he has replaced the tires, radiator, fuel pump, heater core, battery and ignition module all within the last year and a half. First off, about how much would a vlave job cost. The other thing is, he says it won't pass smog so he can register it non operational to the buyer(i live in CA, so you have to smog to register). Or he's going to just spend the money to fix it up, but then he will obviously sell it for more. Right now, he wants 1500 or best offer. I'm thinking if I could offer a grand that would be a good deal? For a running 5.0. What do you think? I'm meeting up with him tomorrow to check it out. Recently I posted a thread about maybe selling my 67 coupe and using the money to start modding my 93 GT, im thinking the 88 could be my project car as the 93 will remain/be my daily driver to get to school/work. One more thing, is it a must to change from SD to mass air? If I wanted another fox should I just wait and keep an eye out for a 89 and up? Thanks guys!

Yea... like I said I have the 67 that needs work and have been thinking about selling it to use the money on my 93 and also pay for school,etc. The 88 just seems like a really good deal that is hard to pass up

Anyone else? And idea about the valve job?

Just got back from looking the 88 gt. When I got there, it was like love at first site lol. Maybe not love at first site but I was definitely surprised by its condition. It is black with the two tone silver bottom/black stripe all the way around. At first didn't notice the peeling of the paint because it was raining, so he moved the car under an over hang. The paint is peeling mostly on the roof and some on the drivers rear quarter which the guy said was replaced a few years ago when someone side swiped it in a hit-in-run in a parking lot. He is the original owner which I think is a plus. Then, I got inside and the cloth interior was absolutley in perfect condition although the ash tray door was gone lol. Only other thing he said is that the fuel gauge is stuck on full until it gets down to like two gallons or so.......not sure about that?? Easy fix? Then I popped the hood to find a pretty clean engine bay which was surprising also. You can tell he took pretty good care of the car. When he fired the engine up, it sounded good, didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. As mentioned before in the thread, he said the car runs rough because it needs a valve job. I didn't test drive it yet, but when it was fired up and when he drove off it sounded ok. Watching him drive down the street it didnt appear that the car was having any issues getting up to speed. Anyways, I'm going to go ahead and offer him a grand and see what happens. One question though, when talking about the smog issue again he mentioned how it would need a vavle job and tune up before it can pass, any one have experience with that? And also the fuel guage issue? Obviosuly it will need a paint job but I'm not worrying about it right now. Thanks
