I always use motorcraft filters after I read a big article posted on here somewhere about fram filters and how much they suck. As for oil, I used 5w30 royal purple before my headswap, but I am gonna give my gaskets like 6k miles to set in before I use my royal purple again, supposedly its not good for new motors...

I use AMSOIL 5w-20 and their oil filter. Their oil filter is the best on the market. Filters to 4 microns.

Where do you buy your amsoil? and isn't that stuff really expensive, like it puts Mobil One to shame sort of thing? But I have heard there is nothing on the market that is better!

Thats all I use (Amsoil). It is WAY expensive, but like anything else, you get what you pay for. And yes, in all the independent studies I have seen Amsoil puts pretty much every other synthetic to shame.

Mobil 1 filters have been shown to be equally as effective.. but I use Motorcraft.

Viscosity-wise, you should use the thinnest you can use to still maintain good oil pressure. Since I only have 7k on the car, I still run 5w20 Mobil 1.

So what weight are you using in your 4.6 and how many miles do you get out of Amsoil? I've heard some people get ridiculous mileage between oil changes when they use Amsoil. Is that true, and how far do you go between oil changes?

Isn't Mobile 1 supposed to get something like 5-7k miles between oil changes? In my friends new vette, his owners manual says to only use Mobile 1 and change the oil every 7-8k miles. That's too cool, cuse I always forget to change my oil on time! :damnit:

Why would you want to go a ridiculous amount of miles between oil changes? That is not being very nice to your car

I don't "think" that it's hurting the car to go that long without an oil change when you are running those oils. I could be very wrong but I wouldn't think that GM would tell all their Vette owners to wait until 7-8k miles to change their oil because they like doing waranty work?
But like I said I don't really know. It's my understanding that it takes that long for the oil to reach the point to where it needs to be replaced.
I'm hoping to learn the answer to this in this thread! LOL

I use Amsoil 5w-30 High performance motor oil with their SDF-11 oil filter. I am a preffered customer, so I get a bit of a discount on their products. I first put Amsoil in my car in July of 2004. I just changed it for the first time a couple weeks ago. When I drained it, it came out almost new. I put around 8,000 miles or so on my car in that period of time with no problems. Amsoil full synthetic motor oils are the only ones I know that offer a 25,000 mile/ 1year drain interval guarantee. The oil filters are good for around 10,000-12,000 miles, and it is recommended that you change them every 6 months, but only change your oil in total every 25,000 miles or 1 year, which ever comes first.

As for a comparison between Mobil 1 and Amsoil, Amsoil has Mobil 1 beat in terms of drain intervals, friction protection, and flow comparison numbers. If you don't believe me, do some research on the subject at Amsoil's home page. They have charts of independant tests between the two.

If you start using Amsoil, I recommend to become a preffered customer. Its only 20 or 30 dollars for the first year, and I think 20 to renew your preffered customer status each year. The money you save on their products as a preffered customer more than pays for your yearly fee, trust me, I know with experience.

Even if the oil does not break down as quickly it still accumulates dirt, acids, and volatile compounds just as fast. Some of these things are not removed by a filter such as acids. I think it is best to use reasonably priced oil and change it every 3000 miles.

I've seen a document of an oil analysis test that was performed on Amsoil motor oil after 500,000 miles of usage. All that was done is regular oil filter changes every 10,000 miles w/ the new added oil to make up for what was lost during the fitler change. The Oil analysis read that the oil wasn't even at half life in terms of acidic build up. Any type of dirty that is greater than the filtration micron should become trapped by the oil filter. Amsoil is not just a synthetic motor oil, but a motor oil with a synthetic additive package that helps reduce the build up of acids and things of the such in the motor oil. You must also remember that before installing Amsoil motor oil into any vehicle, you are advised to run an Amsoil engine flush through the motor which helps break down the previous motor oil and breaks loose old sludge and varnish that might have accumulated in the motor over time. This helps in allowing Amsoil to do its job.

I suppose you can change your oil every 3000 miles while using Amsoil, but IMHO you're wasting your money. The only way to know 100 percent for sure if oil is bad is to send a sample in for testing. Another thing to note is Ford can NOT void your warranty because you use extended drain intervals unless if they can prove that the motor oil is defective due to extended usage and prove it is responsible for your problem.
