Another Post for AMSOIL 5W20, I use the K&N oil filter though... I know it doesn't filter down to 10 Microns like mobile one. I believe K&N is 20 microns but it flows alot better than the mobile one filter. With my large cylinder heads on my cobra I would much rather have better flow rate.

There is probably an Amsoil dealer/distributor in your area. If you can't find a private dealer in your area, then I'm sure a couple of the good auto parts stores around you carries it. If not, you can always buy direct from Amsoil theirselves. As I said before, become a preffered customer and you will save tons of money on Amsoil products. Remember, there is more to a cars fluids than just motor oil, and Amsoil can accomodate you in all areas.

So would you guys say that a 10w30 is better to use with synthetic oil, down here in canada what oil viscosity would you guys recommend ?
I never heard about Amsoil before, thats some very good info.

I personally like the Amsoil 7500. Thats what I started using in the 00. Kilgore Trout is correct about the contamination. viscosity depends on the area you live in and temps. I also prefer Motorcraft or Carquest oil flters( same thing different name on them) .
You can run any name brand oil and some no name brands, if you change your oil every 3000 miles and install a new filter, you will not see a significant increase in fuel mileage or engine longevity.
Again, I run the Amsoil 7500 so I change my oil half as much. the older an engine gets, the more contaminates that get into the oil.
I worked in a shop years ago and did nothing but tear down engines. engines that were gunked up, usually had owners that did not maintain very well. It had little to do with the type of oil.
I had a f150 with almost 300k and have one now with 210k. the one with almost 300k had nothing but Mobile one synth. the one with 210k has had nothing but regular oil, both engines do not have any engine noise or irregular wear. BTW the only reason that the higher mileage one quit is because of an accident.

I would recommend a motor oil with a lower grade viscocity in the first index due to the fact that you're in a very cold climate. I run 5w-30 here in Va. with no problems at all. Remember, the first number is the weight of the oil at start up. The second number is its weight when at normal operating temperature. Personally, I'de run a 0w-30 weight in a cold climate, but that is just me.

There are lots of "myths" about Snythetic motor oils on higher mileage vehicles, such as "synthetic motor oils will cause oil leaks". This is entirely false. My mothers van had over 80k miles on it when we switched to using Amsoil. She didn't develop any leaks or serious consumption issues. You can switch to synthetic at any point in time you wish. The idea behind synthetic motor oil is to prolong the life of the motor by providing better surface to surface protection and reducing heat in the process. If you're car has 90k on it, I don't see where switching to synthetic motor oil is going to help anything other than allowing you to extend your drain intervals and allow the motor to stay protected from the point it is at now. If you switch to any synthetic motor oil, I recommend doing an engine flush to remove the old oil and to clean the motor up.

The guy at the ford dealership was telling me that conventional oil is as good as synthetic oil, I doubt that he was right but what do you guys think about it ??

So what weight are you using in your 4.6 and how many miles do you get out of Amsoil? I've heard some people get ridiculous mileage between oil changes when they use Amsoil. Is that true, and how far do you go between oil changes?

Isn't Mobile 1 supposed to get something like 5-7k miles between oil changes? In my friends new vette, his owners manual says to only use Mobile 1 and change the oil every 7-8k miles. That's too cool, cuse I always forget to change my oil on time! :damnit:

I use Amsoil 5-20. I change the oil about every 500-1000 miles. Yes there are more detergents in the Synthetic that allow you to go longer between oil changes, but I am way to anal about my car to go past what I do. It can't hurt anything is the way I look at it (by changing it VERY often).

I haven't done any tests on synthetic vs conventional, but I don't think car manufacturers put in Mobil 1 from the factory just for the heck of it. (Corvette, Cobra R, Porsche?)

He doesn't know what he is talking about.

Here is a link to a comparison in terms of wear protection between Amsoil and the leading competitor Mobil 1. Keep in mind that Mobil 1 is classified as a synthetic motor oil and is better than the leading petroleum oils:

Here is another link to more of Amsoils' test results:

Oh god please tell me you aren't changing your oil every 500 miles? Holy crap do I feel as though I've abused my car badly. I use Castrol Syntec and change it around every 4-5K. Ouch! If I started changing my oil every 500 miles I would almost be changing the oil once a week! I bet I'd get quick at though!

I run Amsoil 5-20 and a Motorcraft filter.

Around here at the local auto parts stores, Amsoil goes for around 6.95-7.95 a quart. I pay 57.25 a case (12 qrts.) delivered to my house. Having an Amsoil account sure does have it's privilages.

Yup. I have an Amsoil account and I've saved quite a bit of money on the products I've purchased. It pays to have an account, especially if you buy Amsoil stuff frequently. You can save on everything, right down to their car polish. Speaking of which, its the best car polish I've ever used.
