I was at the local CARMAX on Saturday getting an appraisal on my car, and the guy that was doing the appraisal told me that they had a 95 Cobra R with 3000 miles on it in January. Hard to believe anyone would trade their R in at a CARMAX.....

Someone probably needed the money fast, or had trouble trying to sell it him/her-self so they dumped it at the car dealership...

The guy didn't say how much they listed it for, but he said they couldn't sell it and wound up selling it at the auction. What a shame.....

needed money fast. your right. that would be the only reason to take it to CarMax. anytime we got vehicles like that (very rare) we would take it to a bigger auction (Manheim most likely). I remember a black S281 a few years ago that was dropped off in Raleigh on it's way to the Charlotte store. When CarMax does sell rare cars you can usually get them cheap compared to other dealers but it is not typical for them to stock them. side note: that's how i got my Steeda (working in the Raleigh store....wholesale purchase)

Kinda geting off subject...my car was sold by ford to Ford (basically sold it to its self, Michigan titled and all)then sold by ford used with 66 miles at the Manheim auction to my local non-svt dealer and bought buy me.

STEEDA....do you know why this type of transaction would take place, car was perfect....my dealer told me it may have been used by ford for some dyno testing, or test drives, auto show circuit, ect. Just curious since you seem to have a bit of knowledge on the auction side of it

I'm not sure what to tell you on that one. I will call a few of my friends that are still in the business. Most of the cars we bought out of the Ford lane were "off lease vehicles" ie. a few thousand miles to 36k miles. Was it purchased at the Manheim Auto Auction (Manheim PA) or at a local Manheim auction near you? When a car is sold at the auction the selling party (Ford in this case) must inform the buyers of any "announcements" rollback, flood, buy back, lemon law, etc. if the car is fine then it is run "green light". Send me a pm or email me with any questions. I'll try and help.
