I know there are alot of questions about headers but i did my research and didnt find the exact answer i was looking for.

I have a stock '85 LX HO and i am looking to get some exhaust i was wondering if you all had any suggestions on what to get. i was thinking magnaflow cat-back but I am unsure what type of headers to get: shortie, equal, unequal, longtube. What is the difference between those. I am new to the mustang world so any advice is greatly appreciated.

shorty headers are the smae length as stock. long tubes go all the way down under the car. equal length are short tubes in which ach tube is the same length.

best bet is unequal length sorties, off road(no cats) h pipe, and the cat back is a toss up on w/e sound you are after. hope this helps, kyle

i would get get longtubes, short O/R h or x pipe, and then whatever "cat-back" you want, if you are planing to do more mods to your motor

but if your not planing on nothing too serious, then i would just get equal lenth

but you will neen to get all 86-93 exhaust parts, because they use true dual, and 85 does not

86-93 headers, h-pipe, "cat-back" is a dirrect replacement (i think)

yeha cat back is direct replacement, just have to move a break line or something like that if you are running tail pipes, i wanna run magnaflow but its so damn expensive, i think im going to cheap out and get dynamax ultraflows, always liked the sound of them

I installed all 3 components of my exhaust setup by myself. The headers were tough, and time consuming, but so was the catback. Heck I even had a fit with the smog pump tube on the x pipe, damn thing gave me a headache.

The only hard part of the headers was getting the bolts tightened, the thicker tubes leaves no room for a few of the bolts to be tightened. Get some Threadlocker Red.

The cat back was hard because I had to get back under there to stop one of the mufflers from rubbing on the frame, and the tailpipes migrate sometimes.

The X pipe was tough because it is larger, and harder to manuver. I put the x pipe under some wood blocks, and then bolted it up.

All of this is can be done in your backyard. Save some money and do it yourself. You will have some fun.

With my 85 I went with BBK 1 5/8" Unequal shorty headers, 2 1/2" off road h pipe, 2 1/2" Flowmaster Force II catback.....i really like the way it sounds. Not too loud in the lower rpms but loud when I really get on it.
