Hello Im new to this I have a 87 mustang gt I put a new dimmer switch in it then I ran the lights for 5-7min and the metal inside of the switch was a bit warm not enough where it was melting the outside plastic but it was warm is this normal?

Make sure your fuses are properly sized.

Fuse #4 is a 15A fuse
Fuse #13 is also 15A

Make sure that they were not swapped out for higher current fuses to help cover up a problem. Getting warm is a sign of current draw. There really isn't a lot of electrical draw after the dimmer to draw that much current
