It could be your thermometer, my engine light came on and my car sounded weird and then when I replaced the thermometer it was just fine.

4 Bad coils.

It is crazy that was the issue, the car runs awesome now.

My 99 took to sputtering a while back. I tried replacing some coil boots to start but it didn't fix it. I just put a full set of Accel coils in and that took care of it. I figured if one was failing they are all the same age so might as well do them all and upgrade.
