I am not sure what you guys are talking about. There are no clamps or bolts to undo when removing the tank. You drop it and wiggle it off the filler neck. The rubber grommet usually needs replacement unless it has been changed recently. Only place I know to get them is ford, around $20. Call first and try the Lincoln-Mercury dealer if they dont want to help you. Thats what I had to do.
The first thing you should remove when pulling the tank is the fuel. It's so much easier if you remove the filler neck by removing those 3 or 4 screws and the grounding/safety clamp. You can drop the tank straight down then instead of fighting with it to get it off the neck. Just my opinion...
i just opened the fuel door and unbolted/unscrewed it from there and then dropped it about 8 inches when I had to install my n2o bottle a while back. Then again when I relocated the battery.
