I own a 98 cobra. And for engine mods its prety much stock.
i have an exhaust system, but nowi wanna make the snake move a little more!! after reading many threads, it seems like most of you guys think that gears would really add a little spice to the cobra. I just cant seem to get my head wrapped around one final decision. I hear talk about 4.30's and 4.56 and i cant even dcide if i should go 3.73 or 4.11.
I know that gear ratios really add a nice punch to a cobra.. but what set o gears are ideal for fast street driving/racing .. sometimes the odd dragstrip race, aswell as city driving and daily driving. I want my car to move.. but i dont wanna loose complete practicality where i cant even shift into fifth. lol
you know what i mean.. plus i have an 18inch rim if that makes a difference or not.. im not to sure..
Does anyone have any suggestion as to how i can get this car moving faster? One more thing.. future plans for a supercharger might be inthe works.. so if that effects gears aswell, then please take that into consideration.
THANKS ALOT

4.30s are a good gear for the DOHC motor, assuming you will be staying N/A. They'll get you off the line and into your power band much quicker. however, if you're going to be supercharging, i would get 3.73s and no higher, or else traction will be a problem

If i'm understanging what your looking for....4.30 will be a little to much for your needs.. I would suggest a 4.10 or 3.90 gear ratio, most people stick with 4.10 in a DOHC 32 valve motor.

Mine had 3.73s in when I bought it. I drove my buddies stock 97 and man the gears made a huge diffrence. I like mine alot, but if I was changing from stock I would probably go with 4.10s. I still get 21-23 mpg with the 373s and can run 75 mph at under 2500 rpm.

4.10s definately - We have both 3.73 and 4.10 in our GTs - and wish we had 4.10s in both.

4.10s and nothin less.. i run about 2300 rpms at 75ish. you'll always wonder what 4.10s would be like if u go 3.73's, my opinion

3.73 is the best gear for 4.6 cause you dont run out of gear. once you go 4.10 you start to run out.

i would get 4.10's and if your end up with enough power mods too top out 4th in the quarter then use a taller tire ( this will bring the overall ratio down and make the effective gearing longer) by doing this you can tune your setup so you trap right at the the end of your powerband.

Wow, thanks for the input Guys! Looks like theres alot of 4.10 lovers out there. Must be a reason for that. Im sure its gonna kick **** from the stock 3.27's i have now. But i notice a few guys said 3.73's are better. Is this just a competiton of opinion, or is it actually better for a 4.6 engine, and like i said with 18inch rims and POSSIBLE plans for a supercharger. would 3.73's be better for the car? Cuz i think one of u said i would run out of gear...

Plus does it make that much of a difference with 4.10's if my car is a 98 cobra compared to a GT...

Yeah, at 166 MPH. You will not run out of gear with 4.10s unless you trap higher than 110 mph in the quarter.

drove a friends 98 Cobra with 4.10's...I'd say that's at LEAST the minimum gear you should consider. With him driving, 4th gear go us to 120+ mph and that wasn't even at redline yet. If you have a good reason to be going any faster than that, then yes, go with a lesser gear that won't "top out" so soon...

btw, yes it was dumb to go that fast but he was trying to show off to sell me the car...

Haha.. Nice! ok cool. Looks like you guys sold me on the gears! 3.73 is no longer an option! im slapping in 4.10s! WOW now im excited! i needed a little boost in my decision making. Now the only question is.. does it matter what brand? Like does some no name on ebay stand a chance againt frpp? lol.. probably not.. but u get the idea of the question.

i think FRPP are your best bet... they're OE quality and directly replace your existing gears. ive heard good things about Motive gears, but the installation is a little trickier with them. Richmond gears are notorious for whining so i'd steer clear of those

After the supercharger install on my car, I was glad I went with 3.73 not 4.10. I still think 3.90 is the best of both worlds. 3.90 always seems to end the debate.
