hey guys, new to the forum but have been veiwing for a while. I just recently found out i have a leaking and possibly blown head gasket. From what i've heard this can be costly to repair. What should I expect to pay for this service on a 99GT? I'm thinking of just replacing the engine instead of opting for repair. Where can I find a complete factory crate engine and how much? thanks

new head gasket will be MUCH cheaper than a crate engine and install.

you can get a forged engine for a few hundred more than a factory one

head gaskets don't cost quite that much yet. Better yet if you do it yourself it's SUPER cheap.

My problem is I have no mechanical skills or else i would try to do it myself. The expense comes with the labor. I've called around a few shops/dealerships and have been quoted anywhere from $850-$1,700 parts and labor. Keep in mind that my car is 10 years old with close to 140,000 miles. I dont want to invest that kind of money in a 10+ year old car that may have numberous other problems in conjunction with this. I recently spent around 1600 to upgrade the worn suspension. My second problem is i'm dead broke so funds limit what I can do as far as upgrading to something forged. I'm not looking for just a new block. I want a complete pan to intake overhaul that can be dropped in to cut down on labor. I'm not trying to make huge power. I just want a fresh start that i can upgrade on at a later date at the lowest cost possible. Any suggestions?

If you don't have the money...there are not many options...pay the 1700 and hope for the best or put yourself into debt....

+1 no joke. you're probably looking at about $3000+ for a stock PI long block crate after everything, and I'm considering that figure with you doing the install yourself. If you really wanted you could take your chances with a Junkyard block, but who knows what you're getting at that point. You could pick up a junkyard NPI long block for $600-900 and a PI long block for about $1100-1600 I'd estimate.

Anyone please correct me if any of my figures are wrong.

Speaking of high mileage, my 4.6 has 165xxx on it (it's a DD) and is running strong, and that's in phoenix, AZ heat to boot. I would shop around looking at online reviews, check with the BBB and try and find the cheapest mechanic with the best reputation if I were you.

Well, first off... what are the symptoms, and who told you it was a leaking/failing head gasket?

We may be able to help you out.

Why not get a used longblock from a Mustang junkyard like MPS?

When we headswapped my car, my buddy who was a Ford tech looked up a head gasket swap (the closest thing to the headswap in Ford's service computer) and it was estimated at $1200.00 - $1300.00 depending on the model year.

I'd just do the head gasket change, it will be cheaper than buying a crate motor and having it installed. While you're at it, you may consider some headwork to sweeten the deal and make this one of those "good problems."
