well, i just got a new car, after my other got totaled. it was running great until i changed plug wires and installed a cai. turns out i had two wires in the wrong spot, but i fixed that and disconnected my battery to reset the comp. so it ran fine, drove it around maybe 20 minutes. then on my way home im sitting in traffic, and it just dies. i start it up, drive some more and it dies again. i bring it home, let it cool for 10 min with the hood up, start her again, and watch the engine while it idles for a minute or two. let it coll for another 10 minutes, and let it idle again for a minute or two. it will idles good for about 20 sec at ~800 rpm, but then drops to ~550 and stays there. it idles bearly enough to keep the engine going. whats going on?

I would check the basics like your timing , making sure ur maf is clean, vacume leaks , fuel pressure and spark, and go from there

Ditto that. check your plugs/wires/cap/rotor while you are doing your testing/cleaning. The contacts on your rotor/cap are probably black if you haven't replaced them in a while.

Check vacuum with a vacuum gauge. Check fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.

Are you sure what you are smelling is oil and not fuel???? Do you have any oil leaks at the valve covers or intake/timing cover?

you installed a CAI.. i would say to check all of the hose clamps.. if there is a leak bfore the TB but after the MAF the car will run like crap...

PRobably clean the MAF at the same time. The CAI filter could have been over-oiled from the factory...
