My father in law is looking to ditch his $50 a month plan with ATT because he used to call us all the time, but since we moved in with him (to take care of him) he does not need to call us as much. He wants to get something that will cost him about $10 per month (fixed income). Would a pre-paid phone be better or should he get onto a consumer no contract plan? Also it would be great if he could keep his old phone (won't have to transfer contacts or number), or have a store tech, at place of purchase, transfer his contacts (he's using an old Motorola Razer3.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Why not just toss him on your family plan, maybe?
Else, there are hundreds of good pre-paid options he could slide onto.
Data needed?

I would put him on my plan but with the addition of the add a line and the forced data plan ( which is BS) puts it close to what he's already paying. Besides, he's proud to have paid his own way through his life. I don't want to take that from him. No data required for him since he does not text.

ATT, it was my understanding that his phone is so old that they won't support it under the new plans, even though it still works fine on his plan.

I usually just pick up a cheap one at the gas station to talk to my girls. I'm usually bored of them by the time the minutes run out.

check out consumer cellular. they have plans as low as $10 a month, but you pay for each call on that plan. step up to the $15 a month plan, and you get something like 100 minutes a month. and if he is a member of AARP he can get a discount on the phone plan to get it closer to the magic $10 a month. my plan with them. after AARP discount, includes 250 minutes a month, unlimited texting, and 1.5gb data per month, and once all the taxes and other crap is figured in, my bill is right at $40 per month. by the way, they gave me the unlimited texting because that is what i do most.

Yeah... Grandparent plans and phones abound these days. They don't want all the garbage that we do; just a mobile phone that works like the one that they knew.

I'm going to try again to see what can be done to get him on my plan with a simple no text, no data flip phone. I really don't want to have to go through the mess of transferring his contacts to another phone.

it was easy with my phone when i upgraded, i just took the new sim card, put it in my old phone, saved teh contact information to the sim card, and then put the new sim card in my new phone.

If he has a digital phone and contact list with SIM card, you can go into his contacts and EXPORT them to a file. Those contacts can then be imported on the new phone. This works on even non-smart phones.

I used to have trac phone. They charge you 20 bux a card up front but the minutes last 2 months might have been 3months don't remember. They also carry over to the new card.
If he gets a "smart" phone they will double or triple the minutes.
That's what they did with my old phone.
I upgraded to straight talk and turns out they are same company so same old number. Wooo hoo!
