Would like some info on the easiest way to go about removing the pressure hose from the rack. Doesn't seem you can fit a wrench in there to remove the fitting on the rack. I would appreciate any info, thanks.
The service manual says to remove the pulley. From my own experience, do not attempt the job without the CORRECT special tool to remove the pulley. There is a different tool to install the pulley. Double check that if rented/purchased that the threads match. The later model cars have metric threads. The tool with SAE threads will appear to fit but in fact will only engage a couple of threads. The result will be stripped threads when attempting to use.
It is vital that the telflon seal be replaced. The seal will need to be heated and streched to fit over the connector.
Consider getting a Chilton's manual from your local autoparts stores. The diagrams and step by step can really fill in the gaps. They are only $20.
FWIIW, if the high pressure hose is leaking from the fitting, it can NOT be serviced. It must be replaced.
I have the same problem on my 2004 and this reply is not helpful. The manual says "disconnect the pressure hose and return hose"...
The hose is simple to disconnect at the pump. The pulley does not need to be removed.
The issue is that there is no room to get a wrench on the fitting at the other end of the hose.
So, what is the secret to removing the hoses?
So you're removing the line from the rack. Remove the lines that are in the way first. Or just unbolt the rack. It's really easy, 2 bolts literally hold the rack in, and the steering shaft bolt you can see from the back side of the subframe. Then you can literally move the rack a foot away from it's mounting and it should be very easy to then unbolt the lines. I've never just done the lines, on every rack I've done it's been easier to unbolt the rack first and move it to make it easy to get the lines.
I'm opposite, I'll unbolt everything out of my way because I hate fighting to get something. I don't like trying to bend my hand and arm in 5 ways to get to one thing, that's how frustration sets in and wrenches go flying.
Yeh, I don't mind that part. I just don't like do it one way, then finding out later that it could have been a lot easier. LOL Thanks for the tip about the bushings, too.
