Hood Problem

Well I just got my 09 Mustang GT, and I was driving it home from the lake, figured I would bring it up to around 100 as part of the break in process and bam, the hood came up, only to the point as to which you would pull lever to pop the hood.

It scared the living **** out of me, I immediately pulled over and shut it. Now I am scared to go over 80 in the car, as for the hood shakes and bounces a descent amount, is this natural for them to bounce a bit? Has anyone else had this problem?

Is that why I see a fair amount of pictures with hood pins on stock looking hoods? Thats the last thing I need is for my hood to fly up and shatter my window and my glass top.

Hood shake is normal, yes. Hood unlatching itself is NOT normal. Did you recently have it open? Maybe it was latched right or if not you better take it in for a look. I would try to re-create the problem by tugging up on it when latched to see if you can lift it up past the latch to the safety - that might tell you how easy (or not) it could happen again.

Thanks bud, I suppose I could go and tug on it...im a sally when it comes to those kind of things though, feels like im doing harm to the car. Thank you, I will try that tomarrow!

My hood shakes badly at anything over posted speed limits. I'll be installing hood pins soon as my car sees track duty at 100+ mph and it is unnerving to watch the hood shake so bad. I've installed hood pins in many of my cars, so one more won't hurt, I guess.

Same thing happened on my Explorer recently. Scared the crap out of me. Weird because I never noticed hood flutter on that car. Actually, I never noticed it on either Mustang either. What you can do to try and stop it is adjust your hood stops up a bit, so that they put more pressure on the hood.

I did that with mine before the hood pins, but all it did was make the hood noticeably higher than the fenders

Same thing happened about a year ago on my 05 GT. I was doing about 90 - 95 off and on and the hood slipped the first latch.

I posted on another forum and others acknowledged it happening to them. It is rare but there are enough Mustangs out there so you are not alone with this problem.

I like the KR hood latches but they are not available yet to non-KR owners. Another thread showed someone with early 70's style hood pins--round, twist open pins with a three-bladed propeller shape for gripping the hood pin.

You can do it to where it wont look noticably higher but still help "solve" the problem.

I dont' know if it's the 05 hood, but I do 120 in my car on occasion with not hood shake at all.

Do you have a hood scoop? It's only cars with the scoop. My girlfriends 2006 V6 without a hood scoop is fine up to 115 mph.

My GT is a non-scoop car and it wobbles and shakes at 80+ . I don't think it is limited to scoop hoods.

I had the same "wobble" thing, but never popped the hood. I reset the rubber bumpers about 1/4" higher, loosened the mounting bolts and dropped the latch all the way down (hood harder to close) Then I installed a medium density 1 " thick foam, filling in the area above the headlights to keep air out. The hood compresses the foam to about 1/2 inch. I have run upto 125mph, no movement, very tight.

I've had mine to 150 - smooth as silk. I have the stock hood with n/f scoop. I've noticed though that the hood blanket is compressed where it rests on the FRPP CAI tube. Maybe that's a bit of extra support in the middle of the hood. If so, these hood flutter problems can be easily fixed with the addition of a Whipple HO supercharger!

Hood flutter seems to be fairly common at high speed. I had it around 80 or so and worse the faster I went. I think the squareness of the front traps air and it can't escape quickly enough. Anyway, a nice set of hoodpins will solve the problem. Increased safety and good looks as well. It's a win+win.... Mine are from RingBrothers, pricey but very well engineered and they look just awesome. Most of the others I looked at mounted too far inboard for my tastes.

Picked up a set of Scott Drake (same as Shelby but without the name) hood pins yesterday and will be installing them over the next week. Note that the lanyards can be taken off by removing then reinstalling the safety ring - no need for cutting. I'll be leaving the lanyards off. Will try to take some pics etc during the install.

Same ones I got, but they are not positioned exactly right and the pins are "off" which is noticeable. They don't have the same angle as the scuff plates. I mounted them in nearly (if not the same) location ScreamingRoush did as I also don't like the closer to center location. After cutting the holes, during the test fitting of the pins, I rotated the scuff plates/studs in many directions and this was the best looking one.
They're in and work...besides...mine isn't a show car

This is the worst one.

I'm going to have to play around with the positioning to see what works for me. I'm in no rush to get them installed - it's almost time to put the car away for winter anyway.
