Hey would it be safe to take a home stereo and hook it up like an amp in my car? I could cut the plug and hook the power to a battery source and ground the other wire. Would it be safe or is a power inverter NEEDED?

the home stereo will run on 120 v so you cant just cut it and run it to a 12v battery. sometimes it will work though, you have to look at the plug on the stereo where you would plug it into the wall, it will say input and output, sometimes it switches 120v to 12v, in that case you would be able to as i did with my tv for car, just have to get the correct fuse for it.

If the plug does switch from 120 to 12, how would I go about hooking it up?

whats the amperage rating on the plug?
you will need that size fuse then you can cut the plug and run it to power and ground in your car.
the tv i had said it needed 250mA which equals 1/4Amp so i just threw a 1/4 amp inline fuse on the power wire and it worked just fine.

I would pick up a power inverter if I were you. That doesn't sound like the best idea to me. I'm sure walmart has one for like $20.

Thanks guys, Im goin to go check the price on one, I am only using the stereo for a month until I can buy some speakers, but the inverter might come in useful later.
