HOW DO YOU TAKE OUT A FRONT WINDSHIELD

Hi Guys

I got a '66 Mustang Convert. that getting ready 4 the media blaster.

I've striped all but the Convertible Top & Front Windshield.

Need you help/suggestions/webpages that will help me to disassemble those parts please.

1. How 2 remove front windshield ?
2. How 2 remover convertible top thats in the down position in my car ?

On the windshield, take a razor knive and slice the gasket off around the peremeter of the glass. It's not worth the risk of breaking the glass to try and push the glass out of the gasket seal. It "can" be done, but for what a new seal costs...hardly worth the aggrevation or broken glass. Especially if the glass is going to be reused and is an original Carlite glass. Even if you are replacing it, still faster and easier to cut it out. You don't want to keep an old seal anyway...
The top should have two (or three?) bolts on each side of the frame at the front of the interior quarter panels. Again, if you are replacing the top, check with whomever will be installing the new top and see if it's ok to slice the top off at the back, otherwise, you will need to get in the back and remove all the screws, bolts in front, disconnect hyd arms if power top, lift it out.

Thanks 4 your impute I certainly appreciate the tips on how to cut that gasket.

What's got me going right now is first things FIRST: HOW TO REMOVE THAT CHROME TRIM ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD.

I know the tool I have to buy.

QUESTIONS PLEASE:

1. How many (so-call clips are there underneath the chrome trim ?)

2. Where to start with the " Y " windshield tool ? Top left, Top right, Bottom left,
Bottom right ?

3. Do you have or any of the other guys on this forum have any pictures of those
mysteous clips ?

Oh yea, that can be a pain. Pretty hard to describe...how many clips? too many You need a molding tool. Took me a bit of practice to learn how to use it. THe tool does not slide under the windshield gasket rubber. It slides between the rubber and the chrome. What you are trying to do, is get that sharp point under clip andslightly pry it inbard towards the center of the windshield-away from the lip on the chrome molding. THis only makes it possible to pul the chrome up. Does not actually lift the chrome-just pulls the clip away. ANd slightly means SLIGHTLY. It will be really stiff anyway. ANd will take a good deal of force. I use plastic chisils to pry the chrome up in one corner and start releasing clips. One at a time. If you have original chrome trim in good shape-take your time and don't damage it. I've never used the repop stuff, but have heard t's pretty poor fitting.
THis a really hard to describe. It would be advisable to have some one assist that has done this before so you can see ow it comes off.
SOrry, didn't read the whole post. If yo have the Y tool, like I said, the point goes under the clip. ANd "under" is misleading, it really catches an edge of the clip. THe side if the Y not under the chrome (the other end) gets braced against the rubber gasket. Keep moderate pressure sideways to keep the tp uder the edge of the clips, and pull the handle so the force is pulling the clip away from the chrome as described above. Start lifting the chrome.
Note: Original never removed chrome can sometimes have LOTS of hard, clay like goop (factory sealer) that will make finding the clips with the tool nearly impossible. You can only feel them. Again, take your time, use the tool to carefully scrape the goop out of the way till you can dig down to the clips.
Last note: frustration with this task can lead to excessive force on the tool resulting in skating the tool accross your hood at high speed...ask me how I know...

Well, the only thing I can do is: TRY.

Again, if I understand this info correctly, bear with me please.
ONLY ONE PART OF THE; HOOK,POINTED END goes under the chrome trim and on top of the rubber factory seal YES/NO?

And all in between is FISH AROUND trying to un-hook something I don't know actually where the damn clips are and what they look like

Like shooting at the invisiable man in the DARK . . . lol

Where does one get/buy/rob; PIANO WIRE.

Funny think I do own a grand piano. Don't play it that much. 2 busy trying to fix/repair/restore my Mustang.

So, is it a tool that has PIANO WIRE HOOK-UP TO 2 HANDLES ?

Some More Questions Please:

From what I can - C - from those pics, the clips are covered by the rubber gasket correct ?

Now if I'm suppose to put my " Y " trim removal tool under the chrome trim and I catch one of those CLIPS will it release the chrome trim.

I don't sea how ( Am I dead in the water again ? )

I'm 2 FIRST CUT around the rubber gasket with a carpet knfe or razor knife.
Then hunt around from those clips in the position that are shown in those GREAT PICS you were kind enough to sent me.

Hey BarnStang I bought the " Y " trim tool with the red handle today.

Just one more question: Aren't I suppose to place the tool on the glass ( I'll put tape 2 cover the glass so I don't mark it up )

Now if that's the case (putting my trim tool on the glass and jimmy around 4 the clips ~ then if you look at the clips in the pictures, I'm putting the trim tool against the car body and NOT THE GLASS.

At least is that's the way I'm seeing it.

As allways I need your help.

It seems like you are overthinking this. THe chrome trim comes off first. THe clips are snapped onto small studs welded to the windshield frame. You're just going to have to try and figure it out or get some help. LikeI said, this is not a task that is easily explained. TH clips are spring steel. THe chrome trim has a very small lip on the bottem edge that slides under the clip. Pull the clip back, pull the chrome up.

now installation

I am wondering howto install the windshield; can someone help? especially curious:
- what type of a sealant to use to make the shield leakproof as an alternative to 3M stuff sold in mustang stores (cannot be shipped overseas damn it). What's the 3M based on - silicone? polyurethane? some synthetics? acryl? bitumen? some polychloride?
- where to apply the sealant? ( between frame and rubber? rubber and glass? )
- how to position clips on the windshield frame (really can't figure it out now). And I have two types (big and regular on 67 coupe) which one goes where?
- how to install the windshield to minimize the chance for breaking?
- is there any way to remove glass's whitish discoloration, around edges?

Removal was easy, you can use carefully a screwdriver to pop up chrome molding, no special tool is required to remove clips
