I have a chance to get another car, has anyone used a tow bar on a II? It would be the easy thing for me to do. A mechanic friend thought it would ruin the bumper of the car.

Aside from the possibility of pulling the bumper shocks apart, yes it will damage the bumper.
Use a tow dolly, or better yet, a trailer.
I once met a guy halfway on a KC. He tow dollied it there on 15 year old bias-plys. Needless to say, the car suffered quarter damage when both rear tires shredded.
