my plates on the stang expire in a few days. i got the notice in the mail a few weeks ago. the total for my license plate renewal is $419

OUCH!

just wondering what it has/will cost others to renew their plates. I am NOT looking for initial cost to plate your car, just annual renewal.

Yeah ad valorem here in georgia 20 bucks for the "sticker" for the year and then 25 for the personalized tag as well.

It sucks.

It's $30 a year here in WV, but you have to have your personal property taxes paid as well. Sounds like your state just has the renewal fee & the vehicle taxes combined is all.

Renewal in Michigan is $115.00 plus $35 for the personalized plate. Michigan bases their fees on the price of the vehicle and adjusts it each year for depreciation intil it get down to a certain price.

$36 in PA, no personal property taxes here although I remember them being quite popular in the midwest when I lived in IA and IN. What really pissed me off in IA was that the taxes on trucks were very low compared to cars - gotta please the farm lobby.

$45 / year here for vehicle registration, but I also pay $220 year property tax on my 2001 GT.

If I had a 2005 GT I'd be paying >$400 / year in property taxes.

FWIW, I'll have to pay $390 in personal property taxes on my 06 GT when the time comes. It goes down with the value of the car every year though.

Just for comparison's sake:
$35 renewal
$390 vehicle tax
Real Estate tax in our County in WV on a $200,000 house would be $1,546/year if you don't live in a municipality.

yep, we've got state sales tax on food & crap but we also have vehicle taxes.

Are your state's land taxes about on par with the one I posted? In some cases I've seen, our WV land taxes are a bit lower compared to others so it evens out?

Kentucky has state sales tax when you buy the vehicle. You buy on the full cost of the car if new regardless of the value of your trade. I actually trading down once for a new vehicle and got money back from the dealer. (It is possible.) I still paid 5 percent sales tax on the full price of the new vehicle.
Yes, it sucks.
Then, the county values your vehicle each year and you pay personal property taxes on that. The taxes and plate renewal used to be separate. No one paid taxes. That was long ago. Now, you must pay the taxes when you get your plate. No one gets around it. It will probably be around $400 on my mustang.
