I wouldn't spend the $400 or whatever on the electric ones but I'm toying w the idea of the summit cheapos. I'm not expecting any power gain just noise I guess. Is there even a place to put them after the o2 sensors? Memory is foggy and I haven't crawled underneath in awhile. Anyway are they a terrible idea? Will it run like crap when they are un-corked?

Unless you like excessive noise and exhaust gases coming in your car? I think its a bad idea.
I've never understood the fascination.

Have you heard a 5.0 Mustang with open headers? I'm not sure on your cars modifications, but a near stock/mild 5.0 does not sound good with open headers.

Dont bother, as stated, it will sound like a dump truck. Need high compression and a nasty cam for cool factor.

Nah I haven't heard one but was just kinda playing w the idea. Mainly I guess because my chance i do go to the track I didn't wanna be the quietest azz out there like the other time I went. But if it's dump truck esq I'll pass.

Both my '95 and my current 351w Ranger have had dumped flowmasters on them. It just sounds dumb with no lumpyness to the cam. I have also started them both with open manifolds, and again, just steady loudness, no pulse if you will. Just boring noise.

You can make one plenty loud through some form of muffler or resonator. It will cost more than a cheap cut out, but will be a better sound and get the fumes out the back of the car. I probably preach it too much, but look for some used exhaust component if your on a tight budget. Off road mid pipes are a dime a dozen used and there should be some decent sounding catbacks or at least mufflers you can put turn down on in your local CL or at your local swap meet.

Before GM came out with the Turbo muffler (on the Corvair!), there was a HP advantage for exhaust cut outs. You probably are not going to gain much over a good flowing exhaust now. An exception is if you have a really quiet and restrictive system on there. But many tracks have some type of muffler rules.

I do not care about being quiet at the track. Fast and or consistent get trophies.
