I recently pulled my rearend and installed a locker and new gears. I would like to change the gear oil after 500 miles. Can I put a tube in the filler whole and suck it out or is loosening the whole 3rd member the only way? Some people say there is no need to change it but others say I should, do I need to change it? After about 100 miles I checked the level and it was a little full, the oil that came out had a metallic luster to it.

My rearend needs a stud and two nuts.

I tries using a pump to suck it out but couldn't get the tube in far enough to do much good. I wonder the proper method myself and if it would change any settings removing the third member. Uh oh, I just set myself up for alot of wisecracks

lol, it's especially funny when coupled with your title.

I would take the third member out, it shouldn't disrupt anything, all that happens is the axles slide into it right?

The point of changing the oil is to get all the break-in gunk out, so drain it fully, and I'd get a rag in there and wipe out the case too.
