How to replace starter?

How do I take out my starter? I got an '88 GT. I need to put in a new starter but I can't figure out how to access the bolt further from the ground. Do I need to remove anything else?

I removed my passenger side wheel, and used about 2 feet of extensions, I lined it up on the bolt while my buddy standing beside the car torqued it, there is a hole that will go right to it, you will need some extensions and a swivel. Thats the only way I could figure out, someone else might know another way though

Jack up the car. Put jackstands under it. Go under the car. Remove the bolt holding the starter cable on. Then take out the two bolts holding it in place. Once your under the car if it takes you more then 5 minutes your overthinking it. No need to take the wheel off or remove anything at all. Good luck!

The top bolt is a little trick to get at. As metioned, some extensions and a 1/2" universal socket are what you need.

Use some tape to hold the bolt in the socket when you go to put it back together. That will keep the bolt from falling out of the socket. If your universal socket is worn and limp, wrapping some tape around the outside of it may help.

I figured out a way to get to the upper bolt on the starter without multiple extensions and without taking the wheel off. I got the smallest ratchet I had (about 7 inches long) and used just a 3 inch extension. I got under the car and reached through the K-member to get the socket on the bolt and then I was able to get the bolt of in 1/8 turns. Took about two minutes but I got it, got the new starter in and it works great.

A short wrench (ratchet wrench especially) makes short work of the top bolt.

Mine has a brand new 331 stroker, and the ash tray does work, its never been broken. 89GT convertible with 90,000 miles.

Well keep that ash tray in good shape. You may have the only one still working. I'm sure that ash tray alone will increase the value of your car by like $10,000-$20,000.

You can buy repair kits - and even new doors from 50resto......I'll let you know how well it works.

Mine was actually working until one day when I was crawling out from under my dash after installing a new clutch quadrant and fell back....guess where my hand landed. I was so happy to find a car with a working ashtray door too...

I think the other guys already covered the top starter bolt. The most important thing is a steady hand and PATIENCE!
