i wouldn't use it to paint a car. i recommend a sharpe cobalt HVLP gun as an entry level gun. you can get surprisingly good results, its not expensive either about $150. if you buy a low quality gun to start with it will be frustrating and difficult to get decent results. another thing to consider is that HVLP guns require a very large air compressor capable of delivering a minimum of 11scfm at 40psi. most new crafstman and 110v cambell hasufileds are incapable of providing this. a good compressor available at home depot is the husky 60 gallon 7hp 220v. it is made by cambel hausfield and is good for painting and most other auto work. if your compressor is smaller get a standard pressure paint gun. it will creat more overspray but your paint job will come out much better than if you try to use a HVLP gun without adequate air.
I recently picked up a Warner Conversion HVLP gun to start automotive painting and a 33 gallon 6hp Craftsman compressor to begin painting. The gun was $130 and the compressor was $300. I was under the imnpression, until 6 months ago, that you need lots of push to run an HVLP paint gun. It is not true. The conversion paint guns require less than 8 CFM at 40PSI to run. My cousin who has painted cars for years turned me on to this and prevented me from spending alot of money I did not need to spend and has worked well so far.
