I have spent 4 solid days messing with these 3.90 gears, with all new bearings.I purchased the ratech pinion depth setting tool and it said I needed a 0.42 shim so thats where I started, so with good backlash I ran marking comound, the pattern was centered but it is not a defined oval like when I set up my ford 373s.but I test drove it and it whined .since then I have tried every conceivable shim from 0.32 to 0.42 and the marks will move around but allways not real defined. I must have filled with gear oil and test drove 10 times, allways whined on decel. trying pinion shims from 0.42 to 0.36,I can get the pattern centered pretty good from root to top of teeth, but its weird, the drive side is kinda like an oval with a little hunk missing out of the pattern, the coast side pattern is really thin but centered, the drive side is towards the toe and the coast side is towards the heel.I have tried 0.08 backlash all the way up to 0.15.man I started all this cause my used ford gears had the tinyest whine which you couldnt really notice if the radio was on with little volume, but now $300.00 later im thinkin of putting them back in.I ruined a new inside pinion bearing from all the press ons and offs, and that was only the final moves before test drives the rest of the time I used an old bearing that was enlarged to slip on and off.Im really starting to think that there is a problem with the motive gear set I got, maybe they were mixed up at the factory or just defective.Im gonna call on monday and check into what I can do,maybe they will exchange em as defective.

Sorry for the frustrations. I need 3.73's want to install the gears myself, I've rebuilt motors, transmissions, painted all my cars, but for some reasons gears frighten me. I guess for the reason of what you're going through, having to install, reinstall. Best of luck and let us know what happens Mr Raccoon.
