or bearing or something..im not the most tech guy for sure, but i took a look at some youtube vids and i think thats what im looking at..assuming the worst, do i have to replace the whole engine, rebuild, i mean what are my options? should i take it to the dealership?

its a 2002 gt with 83k on it. what really sucks is i was just gonna put some headers on it, i just paid off all my credit cards, and i just paid off the damn thing THIS month.

any help or input would be great...

What are the symptoms you are experiencing? Heavy knocking sounds? A smokeshow out the exhaust?

A video would be nice, but I wouldn't be driving that thing if it comes down to rebuilding it on a budget. Driving with Piston to Valve Contact will not allow any part of the motor to be salvageable. Be very careful with the amount of stress you put on the car until you know 100% what the problem is.

Good Luck.

im not driving it again- im having it towed tomorrow.

we thought it was an exhaust leak..up near the headers, so i bought some shorties to throw on next week. it was making a clicking noise now and then but nothing major at all..no smoke from the exhaust or anything. tonight it really started rattling and knocking BAD..at first i was thinking something was rattling in the cat or headers but it got bad. but in 5th gear i had ZERO symptoms of the problem..it was worst in 1st and 2nd.

thanks for the response- im sick about this. i love that damn car.

The knocking sounds should have increased with the RPM's I believe if you truly threw a rod. The Cats may have broken loose, although that is not likely, but IDK about SLP's quality of cats. That usually happens with guys who put a blower on and run the stock midpipe and cats back there. If you turn the ignition to accessories, are their any trouble codes for the CEL?

naw, just a check engine light but that always pops up due to the exhaust- other than that freaking clatter, the car is ok. everything running right.

I wouldn't give your hopes up, it can very well be something small, but without a soundclip or something, I cannot tell. I can diagnose symptoms to things I've seen or experienced, but not over the internet like many guys here can.

Couple of things:

Pull the Dipstick, is it milky? Or have shavings?

When you can, get underneath the car and shake the piping around the cats as hard as you can, there shouldn't be any noticeable rattling coming from the cats.

Good Luck.

Check the torque on your sparkplugs. Sometimes before they blow out you will hear quite a bit of extra noise coming from the engine.

Well if you have to rebuild the motor you mine as well go ahead and put a forged block in...you can get a brand new mmr600 forged block good to 600rwhp for under 2500$ on ebay...

You can put a donor motor in for less, if you're on a budget. Check out your local pick-n-pull, they may even have a 5.4 or a 4.6 dohc for cheap. Normally $1000 or less.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, if you throw a rod would'nt there be loud knocking with severe driving issues?!

Listen don't be making assumptions about what is wrong and do not just assume that the shop is not going to kick you when you are down. You probably went in there saying; "I need a new engine I just know it... Tell me what's wrong Mr Nice Mechanic..." And he of course said; "You need a new engine son!"

What is wrong, how did it happen? So far what you have described in the thread sounds like a TRANSMISSION issue OR you BLEW A SPARK PLUG to me...

ok..there was a slight tic tic tic noise for a while- nothing major and it was assumed by a lot of people to be some like of exhaust leak - it didnt affect driving AT ALL..nothing. all of a sudden ( really ) that tic tic tic got a BIT louder..i mean you could barely hear it over the exhaust. sat night i took my girl out and she could hear it but it was off and on..nothing consistent and nothing that made me say ' oh s**t , i gotta get this looked at '...all i was gonna do was throw some shorties on it this weekend. then sunday night it started making alot of noise on the way home from the girlfriends house..noise was bad, metallic, worse in low gears and high rpms...in 5th it made NO noise what so ever..between shifts it was rough too..i thought something like a header was loose and smacking around or something or the mid pipe was screwed up..then i got home, it youtube and saw some vids that sounded just like my engine. so thats where i am. i buddy is thinking about making me an offer on the car, but im gonna take it to a local race car shop here in the area first.

totally at a loss here and i appreciate all the input from all of you..

sounds like a plug blew out to me also. pull all the COP's and take each plug out and inspect them. these cars have issues with blowing plugs out of the head

if you blew a rod chances are it would of gone through the block..i had a ticking noise from my motor and ended up putting a rod through the block..sounds more like a plug or tranny since you didnt hear anything in 5th gear but you did in the lower gears. do you have the stock t3650? they are built like glass
