I just registered my Mustang in Illinois and I don't know if I need safety or emissions stickers. When I registered the car I wasn't asked to provide proof of any type of inspection. It's 20 years old, is that why? Or does Illinois not have window stickers?

No one in my neighborhood has any type of sticker on their car aside from the registration sticker on their plate (which I have).

Illinois has emissions testing. Cars over a certain age are exempt, but I can't recall how old it'd have to be. Don't worry, if the state wants your car tested, they'll let you know.

Many towns in IL (mostly in the Chicago area) require a "village sticker" on cars owned by residents. It's the local governments' way of getting a piece of the action. I used to live in a town that didn't have village stickers, but worked in a town that did. At least half a dozen times I came out of work to find a ticket on the windshield, for "no village sticker". Then I'd have to march down to the PD and suggest that they teach their officers how to look up a vehicle's registration.

There hasn't been state inspections of personal vehicles for years now in Illinois. Unless your local authorities have something, your good to go. Just call your local police department, I'm sure they could tell you about that part.

No emssions for obd 1 vehicles and no inspections.

Some towns do have the 'village stickers', mine does, but I never bought one because I live on the border and I never go into this town anyway. Most folks on my block don't buy the sticker, so I can get away with not having that ugly thing stuck to my windsheild.

So if somehow the authorities find out I have no cats I'll be fine? Or would they even bother to check?

Oh you can still get in trouble for not having cats, but I never heard of the cops checking for cats; at least not around the IL side of the St Louis area.

The cops nit-picked the hell out of a coulple of my friends cars, but they never looked under the car.

This is off topic but still related to street legal stuff...

How do off-road and street legal exhaust systems differ? Like differences btw headers or cross-pipes? Would a cop ever be able to tell just from looking at components or even hearing them?

if your car runs well and dosent run rich excessively youll be fine, just dont run bullets, I mean be reasonable with the exhaust (db's) and youll be fine..

I run long tubes, into prochamber, into ultraflo's straight through, she has a decent rumble at idle, cruising is nice and quiet and get's plenty loud under WOT.

I've been by road side checks and thank the Lord I didn't pulled over; they waived me through.

Keep it respectable and no one will hassle you.
