I want to know everything about the KB blower. I know the physics - twin screws, flat torque curve, constant boost level.

here's what i want to know:

1. What's the difference between the 1.7 and the 2.2?

2. Do they currently sell the 2.2 for the 2v motor?

3. KB's website says that the 14psi blower is not CA legal. What's the defference between that kit and an intercooled 9lb blower with a 14lb pulley on it?

4. Where's the best/cheapest place to get the KB kit?

5. How much HP/TQ gains are people getting with each kit?

6. Is it worth the extra $1500-$2000 over a Procharger?

thanks!

1. What's the difference between the 1.7 and the 2.2?

A: From what I know the 1.7 displaces 1.7 liters and the 2.2 displaces 2.2 liters. The 2.2 will do what the 1.7 does only much more efficiently.

2. Do they currently sell the 2.2 for the 2v motor?

A: As stated above, it is current in the testing phase.

3. KB's website says that the 14psi blower is not CA legal. What's the defference between that kit and an intercooled 9lb blower with a 14lb pulley on it?

A: The 14lb KB and the 6lb KB are the same kit, except the difference is the pulley. It probably isn't legal in Cali because of the amount of hydrocarbons, polycarbons, metomusilcarbons, etc. etc. etc. are increased. Cali sucks I don't live there F$^# 'em all.

4. Where's the best/cheapest place to get the KB kit?

A: I would probably get it from Kenne Bell directly. I've heard that Modular Powerhouse (formerly known as T&J and very well praised) is a dealer know, but I'm not real sure.

5. How much HP/TQ gains are people getting with each kit?

A: I think there website is pretty close to accurate. Not exactly accurate, but probably pretty close. You could do a search for "Kenne Bell" + "dyno" and see what that gets you.

6. Is it worth the extra $1500-$2000 over a Procharger?

A: I think that is going to be an opinion. My opinion is yes. I've made up my mind on a KB already.

thanks!

Hope this helps

I'm Starting the Big Fat KB Thread

Everything krly79 said, and....

1. Make sure you understand the performance diff's between a twinscrew & a centrifical blower when making your decission. 2. The KB kit is absolutely complete. Everything you need (as in worth the price). Don't know, but have heard others aren't as well put together. 3. More efficient means less heat induced in the fuel charge. The 2.2 is bigger so watch out for clearance issues (like strut braces). 4. So far KB has kept the distribution of their products pretty tight. As in you got to buy it from them direct or from an authorized dealer/installer. Go to their web site for a list of installers close to you.

I want one..., need one..., got to have one.

What would be the benefit of getting the 2.2 with 9lbs of boost over the 1.7 with 9lbs of boost. You should make the same power either way, right?

I think the 2.2 doesn't get as "heat soaked" because it works more efficiently so you should see a little more HP from the same boost level, but is capable of much more boost. From what I know.

my KB is on order from modular powerhouse, modularfordpowerhouse.com.
the kit takes up to 6 weeks to get on order and is registered to each vehicle specifically by the VIN #. tim at modular is the man i hear, he puts out 2v's everyday that are cobra killers. he's the one doing everything for me when the kit comes in.

according to tim, as stated above, the 2.2 is only in testing and KB is waiting on results from their dealers before deciding on production. you are best advised to order the KB only from a dealer. tim is getting cars from all over the country shipped to his business to be worked on. he's putting out mongoose kits that are basically supercharger package deals...what they (companies) don't provide he will. the KB is not one of those however. and KB is not allowing dealers to come off the price of the kit...so shopping around will make little difference. the kit, alone, is gonna run you around $5300. that's not including labor, parts, upgrades, etc.

here's the 9lb. kit from KB's website:

Billet Twin Screw 1700 Supercharger
Hi-Flo Inlet Manifolds
Billet Bypass Valve Assembly
Bar and Plate Intercooler
HD Heat Exchanger
Intercooler Pump
Water Fill Reservoir
Re-calibrated Mono Chip
36lb Injectors
BOOST-A-PUMP™
Fuel Rails ('00 up)
160° Calibrated Thermostat

on top of that i plan on adding:

FRPP 3.55s
Kenne Bell 90mm Meter & Chip (up to 13HP over stock meter)
Kenne Bell 75mm Throttle Body & "Big Tube" Kit (18HP over stock)
Kenne Bell Gauge (Boost & Fuel psi) Package
Kenne Bell Knock Detector Kit

the kit comes with a custom tuned chip from KB but my car is gonna get the custom tune work done on the dyno, after installation. tim has his own chips... and i'm also having to upgrade to a spec stage II clutch and aluminum flywheel. modular uses a steeda CAI system as well, not KBs.

all of the above is costing me an azz load, but the car will be a beast. from the dynos i've seen it should be anywhere from 415-465rwhp and about the same on torque. i'm selling my saleen series II as an entire system to help pay for the upgrade. if you wanna know what tim's charging on this stuff than PM me. otherwise, go to the site and have a look around. awesome cars... give em a call and speak to rhonda, andy, or tim.

About 50-60rwhp difference at that level of boost.the 2.2 has to be installed on a built engine.........

on the CARB legal issue, im assuming that KB only got the 9psi version approved and hasnt sent in a 14psi unit to get approved. it costs about $40,000 to get a part approved by the Air Resources Board. IIRC the only difference is the pulley.

ok. i'm splitting hairs here.... so, if one were to, hypothetically, get a 9psi kit and put a 13lb or a 14lb pulley on it, would it be CARB legal? or is the only CARB-certified part the pulley?

Just change the pully when you get it tested or whatever....as to the price difference between the KB and the others, I personally say that it is not...you could buy a forged rotating assembly for that kind of money, then crank up the boost and have MUCH more power than the KB with about the same amount of mony, not to mention the improved reliability of forged pistons and lowend.Just my .02.

I wish the 2.2 will be CARB certified but I really doubt it...i guess us in Cali will stick with the 1.7L...what a shame !!!! ..KB is based in southern cal !!!!

If the 2.2 makes 50-60rwhp more at 9psi than the 1.7, then I'm sold
Time for an upgrade...
But the 1.7l is so much fun already

the 2.2L is also capable of (i believe) up to 24psi, whereas the 1.7L is limited to 14psi. correct me with evidence if i am wrong

The 9# kit is CARB legal. Swapping in the 14# pulley requires race gas so it;s possible that you wouldn't be able to pass emissions with it anyway.
BTW I can swap a pulley out and torque down a new one in about 2 minutes without working up a sweat. So all this CARB stuff should be a non issue.

So how does installation work? I see that you have to buy the s/c from an official installation center and then have it installed there. Do they dyno tune it, too? Or does KB say that their chip is 'one-size fits all'? How much have you guys paid for installation?

how about the 2.2L, do you happen to know if for a 9psi pully it will be CARB certified ?
