Hello, I have a 1994 mustang gt, with a 5 speed in it, and everytime i go to put it in reverse, it is a loud knocking sound from under the car, it used to work fine. it did it a couple times, so I'm almost positive its not something I'm doing.

The cars got over 200,000 miles on it, not sure about the tranny or engine, I think the tranny might be original though and the engine from another car.

the clutch is also been catching high, but i bought the car with a pretty beat clutch to begin with.

im getting pretty frustrated, i haven't tried anything on it, but this is my baby, and my only car.

I don't totally follow, but I'll bite anyway. Is reverse just seemingly non-existant when you try to shift into it? I know the T5 can be difficult to get into gear and often times you need to hit another gear before going into reverse, but that doesn't seem like the issue here.

nah, what happens is when i shift into reverse, i'll give it a little gas, let out the clutch, and it just makes banging noises.

its really loud, its not like a grinding noise that im like halfway in gearor anything.

I can get it into reverse fine, but it wont go anywhere and just makes alot of noise.

before it started though it was like impossible to get it into reverse, like you said, i would shift down to it, and it just seemed like i was pushing in random spots trying to find it.

You don't have any problem getting into forward gears though, correct? It almost sounds like your reverse gear may have come off the shaft.

Unfortunately even if we could venture a guess the only definitive answer will be when the tranny gets torn down. You might want to start thinking about a rebuild.

yeah, going to rebuild the tranny and put a new clutch and such in.

my throwout bearing sings anyway so i can fix that.

all forward gears that i've been in work.

I got it in 4th gear for a tad bit but i haven't had it on the highway yet. I will see tomorrow.

Yea that doesn't even sound like it could be broken teeth. Something has to be out of place or very broken like a cracked gear or something. Even if you could diagnose it without taking it out, you would still have to take the tranny out to fix it so whats the point.

it actually sounds alot like broken teeth.
A couple years ago, i took off fastly in reverse, spinning the tires with tons of wheelhop and bang stripped all the gears off reverse. Whenever you put it into reverse and let the cluthc out , it just made sounds like you were sticking metal into a garbage disposal.

thats how mine was.

the sound and the wheel hop before it stopped working.

it hasn't made the noise at all today, i tried going in reverse and no luck, but it didn't make that noise. it did originally.

i know i have to take the tranny apart to see whats wrong with it, but i wasn't sure if anyone could tell me what i gotta look for basically. I'm sure if its broken teeth I'd see all the metal laying in the bottom of the tranny.

If this is the case, and all the parts and tools I need are available, think this would be a one day job?

also, can you all recommend a good clutch for everyday driving, i plan on taking it to the track also, right now the car is stock.

I will be probably driving around to a couple shops, but no ordering online deals.

price range = not real expensive, but not so cheap that i'll be going through clutches like crazy if one will last me longer but is more expensive, I'd rather go for the more expensive one, so I don't have to tear everything apart when I have to replace it again a couple months down the line.
