when i bought my new tires i was told that my drivers side inner tierod was bad. so i went to murrays and bought a new one. after searching i only could find related posted about the tierod ends, which i did this past summer. so could someone please point me in the right direction. -thanks

Well never done one on a mustang before, but im sure all you do is remove the boot, screw in the inner tierod, lock it up and install a new boot. I can't imagine it being much harder.

I thought tires were usually affected by the outer tie rods more so than the inners. I've also heard that the inners are a real PITA and you might as well buy a new rack. If there is play in your wheel and tire when the car is off the ground, that should be your outer tie rod i would think.

inners are easy if you have the right tools. without the tool they are a PITA. any side to side play in your wheels can be either the inner or the outer. the outers are VERY easy to replace. i would suggest asking a alignment tech at a local shop if he does any side work. i'm sure they will be happy to install them for you for a little cash!

tires are affected by ANY loose or worn front suspension and steering parts

yes you need an inner tie rod tool for rack and pinions. its about $100 from a Snap-On, MATCO, MAC tool truck. also i think ford holds the inner tierods in with a rivet, that you need to pull out. if you dont get it all out and thread the inner off it will ruin your rack.

i found out the hard way about that damn rivet! i ruined a rack on a taurus when i first started doing alignments about 3 years ago. i know the explorers dont have a rivet (did one of those inners today) i'm not sure if mustangs do or not since i have never replaced an inner on a newer one.

when i did alignments i woudl try to find something else wrong so they would sell a rack and not the inner. doing a rack was a lot easier and paid better.

I actually changed mine with ease. I used a crescent wrench and a vice grip, and broke them free that way. after you remove the boot, slide it toward the outer tie rod end, and you'll have access to the inner tie rod "nut" where you can place crescent wrench. then clam the vice grip somewhere, and give it hell.

there is no rivet.. but they do use threadlocker, and you DON'T need the inner tie rod tool for mustang inners, you can get to the wrench flats since the rack is right up front.

I don't know where you guys find these fords with rivets.. I have done many inners on taurus from early 90's through current models and have never seen a rivet ??????? What year were these fords

I was thinking of asking on the PTS message board to see if any other ford techs have seen rivets on a inner tie rod but since thats a Ford internal message board and my full name and dealer info goes on every post there I don't want them thinking I am smoking rock.

The worse inner tie rod on a ford is the escape, there is no wrench flats at all it's IMPOSSIBLE to get out.

So if you independant guys get a escape with a inner tie rod thats bad just sell a rack.

it may have been another car i was thinking about. i know some of the early 80s cars had something thru the inners. nothing can be as bad as the chrysler tie rods that you have to take all the intake stuff apart to get to.

chrysler FTL I hate modern mopar stuff and since I am a ford tech I never see those. I did work at a Ford/Dodge dealer at one point but I told them I had severe allergic reactions to chrysler products.

id say that was one of the 10 worst vehicles ford ever made. doing alignments that involve caster or camber adjustments was unnecessarily hard.

alas, i no longer work as a tech, but work at a lincoln/mercury dealer in the parts dept.

i know what you mean. i still have my matco double bay box and all my matco and snapon tools. i figure having a 40k tool bill when im 23 isnt bad. ill pay that off and then be the envy on my neighbourhood for the rest of my life.

so now the new challenge is learning all the ford parts computers. i already have buddies wantign me to get them BOSS 290 parts.
