I remember reading that the intake manifolds on the ~1999 mustangs are commonly replaced. I also remember someone mentioning how to tell if the replacement has already been done. I was seeing if someone could show me a picture of what to look for to tell if the intake has been swapped (something about an aluminum crossover...?). Thanks a lot.

Open your hood and look for that silver metal part
if that part is black then more then likely you should replace it for the intake shown above

. Small picture, but if your intake is all black like the one on left.. replace it before it cracks on you

I'm giving away a fixed manifold for a pre-99 for free. Ask around, maybe you'll find someone that is generous.

Just to be sure. Your giving away a nonpi metal crossover intake?

Well looks like I got lucky. My manifold already has the aluminum piece. Does that mean I'm probably safe in leaving it the way it is? I always see "PI Swap" being thrown around the forums. I know that has something to do with the intake manifold but what exactly is that?

You should be fine.

"PI Swap" refers to swapping the PI (Performance Improved) heads, cams & intake from a 99-04 Mustang on to a 96-98 Mustang. You can also just swap the intake so if you've got a 96-98 motor, it makes sense to replace the crack-prone intake with an updated PI intake and get some (almost) free horsepower while you're at it. Your '99 already has a PI motor and it has the redesigned intake too so no need to worry.

Performance-wise the 99-01 all-plastic intakes and the 02-04 & updated replacement intakes with the aluminum coolant crossovers are the same, as are 96-98 plastic intakes and their updated counterparts.

^ What he said

If you're willing to spend some money and want a nice aftermarket intake check into the new trickflow units or, if you can find one, a stock manifold from a 01 bullit mustang, although you wont see big gains on a stock motor its a great 'base' for future mods...

I got a 97 4.6 thats leaking coolant from the intake on the front passenger side, and I'm assuming its cracked. I don't know if you're still giving that intake away but IS ANYONE HAVING A SPARE INTAKE FOR A 97? I'm out of work and my other car just collapsed lifter. I'm in no position to pay for parts even and I don't want to junk them both and buy a bucket. Hard Times!
